If you are looking for an affordable way to ski Maine this winter, the Ski Maine Passbook promotion is an excellent deal.

If you want to get a sense of the history of Maine ski areas, a visit to the Camden Snow Bowl should definitely be in your vacation itinerary. During the Depression, a group of workers in the town of Camden decided that some fun, winter activity is what the good people of Maine needed. As a result, about 150 people volunteered to build a ski area. People love the Camden Ski resort for its views of the Atlantic Ocean from the top of the mountain. But the fact that it’s one of the great ski Maine ski areas is not the only people visit. In addition to the skiing and riding, many people love Camden’s classic New England town. When you get tired of skiing or snowboarding, you can stop in at a restaurant and enjoy a cup of chowder, or try your hand at tobogganing!

If you enjoy old-fashioned, classic Maine ski areas you should definitely visit Saddleback. Don’t expect any high-speed quads or wide-open cruisers, or groomed trails. You won’t find them at Saddleback. However, you will find narrow New England style trails, old fashioned lifts and low prices.

The Mount Abram Ski area is where the locals hide from the crowds at nearby Sunday River. If you are an advanced skier or rider, you will love the ungroomed glades. Mount Abram is also popular for it’s weekend NASTAR racing events. If you don’t think you are ready for a NASTAR pin, you can participate in one of the Saturday morning racing clinics.

If you are looking for one of the larger, but less commercial Maine ski areas consider Big Rock, which is the largest ski mountain north of Bangor. Located in Mars Hill Maine, Big Rock is a family friendly ski area. Since they are very focused on ski instruction, Gig Rock is a great place to go if you are considering taking ski or snowboard lessons. In recent years, Big Rock has put a good deal of attention into extensive brush clearing, trail reconditioning and cutting and improved snowmaking capabilities. They’ve added new lifts, and purchased new grooming equipment. A new café has been added to the lodge. You can now enjoy homemade soups sandwiches and snacks. Big Rock has a racing program for kids, and a Wednesday night “Ladies Night Out” for female skiers.
