Maine Transportation

If you are planning a Maine trip, you should probably think about a Maine car rental. Given that some of the more interesting sights of the state are in remote places, having a Maine car rental will take the hassle out of exploring all that Maine has to offer. You can find a Maine car rental at any of Maine’s three airports: Bangor International Airport, Portland International Airport, Augusta Airport and Presque Isle Airport, which provides service between Boston’s Logan Airport and Northern Maine. Most major rental companies are represented. Additionally, there are a few independent operators who provide car rentals in Maine.

If you are looking for a more “grassroots” way to travel in Maine, believe it or not, there are ways to explore the state without a vehicle. For example, you can reach Portland Maine by train, bus or airplane. From Portland you can sign up for a sea kayak excursion, and travel in Maine by water. You can camp out on Jewell Island at the edge of the Casco Bay, then return to Portland to explore the museums and historic buildings.

Another option for travel in Maine is to take a bus or fly to Bar Harbor, Maine. A free shuttle bus runs from the Bar Harbor Airport to the downtown area. Stay at one of the downtown inns or bed and breakfasts, and arrange to rent a bicycle, so that you can explore the 57 miles of carriage trails at Acadia National Park. The historic carriage roads of Acadia National Park were financed by John D. Rockefeller between 1913 and 1940. In 1930, Frederick Law Olmstead Jr. paid a visit to the partially completed carriage road system. In a letter to Rockefeller, he spoke of enjoying the experience of being “completely free from the annoyance, and even the dread, of meeting motor cars.” Perhaps going car free can be a fun thing to do on your Maine trip.

You can also do some remote travel in Maine by seaplane. Some outfits will even pick you up at the airport, and take you by van to a lake for a seaplane flight to a sporting camp. If that does not suit your fancy, you can decide to take your Maine trip by bus. Maine actually has an extensive bus network system. Concord Trailways provides daily service to and from Boston’s South Station and Logan Airport, as well as 12 Maine communities. These include Portland, Brunswick, Bangor, Orono and a number of the coastal towns of Maine. Concord Trailways is conveniently located at the Portland Transportation Center, where you can connect to the Amtrak train. Cyr Bus Lines provide daily service between Bangor and Limestone.
