Aberdeen Washington

Aberdeen Washington

Aberdeen Washington is a small coastal city in Grays Harbor County. It rests where the Wishkah and Chehalis Rivers meet and flow into Grays Harbor itself. Historically speaking, Aberdeen WA grew up around the fishing and logging industries. In more recent years, however, the Olympic Peninsula city has been making a push to replace these industries with tourism. Aberdeen has also been keen to market itself as the Washington Coast’s largest retail center. For outdoor enthusiasts, options for things to do in Aberdeen Washington include beachcombing on the nearby beaches, kayaking, birdwatching, and indulging in nature walks through the pristine area forests. Music enthusiasts might appreciate that this is where Kurt Cobain was born.

Aberdeen WA Hotels

Aberdeen WA Hotels

Aberdeen itself does not boast a lot of top notch hotels. Out of those hotels that are found in town, the GuestHouse Inn & Suites probably ranks as the best choice. This agreeable lodging establishment is next to the Chehalis River and the downtown area. It’s the only hotel in town with a pool and that is serviced by the Seattle and Portland international airports. Executive suites are available. Moving outside of Aberdeen proper, many area visitors end up staying in nearby Ocean Shores, where six miles of beach await. Also found in Ocean Shores are hotels, bed and breakfasts, condos, RV parks, and campgrounds.

Aberdeen WA Kurt Cobain

Aberdeen WA Kurt Cobain

Kurt Cobain was born in Aberdeen Washington in 1967 to a family with a musical background. His uncle on his mother’s side was in a band called The Beachcombers, for example, and an aunt of his also performed in regional bands. Going back even farther, a great uncle of his was an Irish tenor who appeared in a 1930 film called King of Jazz. An artistic child, Kurt began singing and toying around with the piano at a very young age. On his 14th birthday, an uncle of Kurt’s offered to give him either a guitar or a bicycle. He chose the guitar, and the rest, you might say, is history.

In high school, Kurt Cobain met Krist Novoselic, who was born in Los Angeles in 1965 and moved with his family to Aberdeen WA in 1979. This was the beginnings of the formation of the band Nirvana, which released its first album in the late 1980s and rose to worldwide fame in the 1990s, laying down the foundation for the 90s grunge music scene that eminated out of Seattle. The third member of Nirvana, Dave Grohl, was invited to join the band in 1990, after Cobain became dissatisfied with the style of the original drummer, Chad Channing. Nirvana enjoyed a very successful run until it all came to an end with Kurt’s death in 1994, which was ruled a suicide. Confusion over his death and what really happened continues to this day. To honor its famous native son, the city of Aberdeen reserved a small area by the Wishkah Bridge as the Kurt Cobain Memorial Park. There are also plans by outside interests to turn a former childhood home of Kurt’s into a museum. The home is located at 1210 E. 1st Street.
