Silver Spring MD is a small, suburban city north of Washington D.C. with a population of little more than 75,000 people. It's situated in Montgomery County and offers a friendly, small-town atmosphere with many interesting things to do and see. Those on a Silver Spring vacation are often traveling from surrounding cities like Bethesda or crossing east to the Potomac River from cities like Annapolis or north from Baltimore. For those interested in weather patterns, the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration is a fascinating place to visit during your Silver Spring travel. There are exhibits on both hydrology and meteorology. The Transport Tornado observatory is another interesting Silver Spring attraction that is a model of a weather satellite. Inside there is also a recreation of an 1891 Silver Spring MD weather office. To take in some excellent art exhibits during Silver Spring travel, head to the Gudelsky Gallery in town. There are a number of works on display by Silver Spring MD students and also some traveling exhibitions that represent artists living outside of the city.

Maryland tours to the Penn Oaks Winery, a popular Silver Spring attraction, are also a fun thing to do. The winery is owned and operated by a German family. The wines, made in German style, range from sweet to very dry and there are also two delicious red wines that are produced on site as well. Visitors can arrange tastings and tours by appointment with the family. The history of Silver Spring is clearly laid out in the form of artifacts and exhibits at the Sandy Spring Museum. Heritage and history are key here where facilities include an art gallery, a blacksmith shop and exhibit space.

During a Silver Spring vacation Silver Spring hotels are ideal for an overnight stay. Though you won't find as much choice as you might in larger cities, there are plenty of good hotels. Another excellent option would be to explore the possibilities of a Maryland bed and breakfast in the area. Often a stay in a bed and breakfast can offer many advantages, including quiet and picturesque locations. With lovely areas to explore like the beautiful forested area of Wheaton Regional Park and Brookside Gardens, Silver Spring presents the opportunity to take the pace down a notch or two and get some true relaxation time into your getaway.
