Inkwell Beach

Inkwell Beach is one of the most well-known beaches in Martha's Vineyard. Found along Beach Road in the town of Oak Bluffs, this small beach with rock jetties on either side is popular with all kinds of visitors, but traditionally has long been a popular meeting place for African Americans. In fact, Oak Bluffs itself has been a major summer haven for African Americans for quite some time, and it only received more attention within the community when President Obama visited with his family. Other notable past visitors include Martin Luther King Jr. and Dorothy West, and in 1994, Inkwell Beach and the surrounding Vineyard community were the basis of a film called The Inkwell. This film reflects the role of The Inkwell Martha's Vineyard as an especially popular place to vacation for affluent African Americans, many of whom reside in East Coast cities like Boston and New York.

When you wish to spend some quality time at one of the Martha's Island beaches, Inkwell Beach can be a fine place to go. Today, the beach is a popular meeting place for people of all kinds of people, and should you wish to do more than swim or play in the sand, most summer days are full of things to do. At dawn, for example, a swim club takes to the waters, and many a morning sees people enjoying exercising sessions in the open air. Yoga sessions are also known to be held at Inkwell Beach, and other popular activities include kayaking, jet skiing, and wind surfing. As for those who just wish to do some swimming, the inviting waters at this sandy beach are relatively shallow and warm.

Some enticing vacation rentals overlook Inkwell Beach, and the Oak Bluffs hotels have you covered should you wish to go that route. The beach is central to all things Oak Bluffs, so a rental unit along its sandy stretch can make for a convenient base. If you prefer, large rental homes can be found just blocks from the water. As is true of other public beaches in Martha's Vineyard, Inkwell Beach can get crowded during the peak summer season, so you might arrive in the morning if you wish to secure a quality spot. Book your stay at a nearby hotel or vacation rental well in advance during the peak season, as waiting until the last minute can be risky.
