Old Whaling Church

The Old Whaling Church is one of the main attractions on Edgartown's Main Street. Built in 1843, this link to the past is heavily tied to the whaling history of Martha's Vineyard. It is also recognized as being one of the best examples of Greek revival architecture in all of New England. Whaling captains had the famous edifice erected, and you can imagine that many of these captains prayed at the site before embarking on extended whale hunting adventures.

The Old Whaling Church in Edgartown Martha's Vineyard is a delightful structure to behold. As you might expect of a church that can be found in Greece, it has a bright white exterior. Dominating its main entrance area are six large columns, and a clock tower displays the time on all of its four sides. Inside this cheery Edgartown Martha's Vineyard Church, bright white paint coats the walls and large windows lend to the bright and airy atmosphere. You can't miss the Old Whaling Church should you be treating yourself to a walking tour on Edgartown's Main Street, and the address is 89 Main Street. Right next door is the Dr. Daniel Fisher House, and it is also worth noting that the Federated Church is close by. The Dr. Daniel Fisher House was built three years prior to the building of the Old Whaling Church, and the Federated Church dates back to 1828.

Your visit to the Old Whaling Church can include more than just admiring the structure. In 1980, it was given to the Martha's Vineyard Preservation Trust, and more than anything, its current role is that of an events center. This Edgartown Martha's Vineyard Church is an especially popular wedding venue, and you can also rent it out for meetings and other kinds of private affairs. The church can accommodate up to 500 wedding guests, and regardless of the event that you have in mind, the Frederick Baylies Room might come in handy. This room on the church's lower level can accommodate up to 150 guests for things such as wedding receptions. When weddings aren't going on, the church often hosts performing arts events, so checking the events schedule can be a good idea for any number of reasons.

Edgartown has some other great historical attractions that are worth adding to your list of things to do while in town, and they include the Vincent House. As is true of the Thomas Cooke House, this home is now a museum. It was built in 1672 and is deemed to be the oldest house on Martha's Vineyard Island. Many of the homes in Edgartown actually predate the whaling days of the 1800s, and this is just one reason why the town is prime for walking tours.
