Great Lakes Fishing

Great Lakes fishing is varied with options for just about every type of fisher. For many folks, the entire reason of their Great Lakes vacation is to go fishing. With four distinct seasons and seemingly endless opportunities to find something biting at the end of your line, the entire region is an angler's dream. If you're not gung ho enough to plan an entire trip around the best fishing on the Great Lakes, you can still add an angling experience to your itinerary and experience one of the classic outdoor pursuits.

From east to west and north to south, the Great Lakes are home to expert anglers who specialize in sharing this experience with others. When you choose one of the Great Lakes fishing charters, you'll travel with someone who knows these waters better than anyone. They can tell you what you're most likely to find at the end of the line on a particular Great Lakes fishing excursion, and where to find the greatest concentration of salmon, trout, or any other fish that's biting.

When you arrange for one of the Great Lakes fishing charters, you can make sure gear is on board and the pick-up point is convenient for your plans. Many of the companies are quite eager to plan a trip around your needs, which is true if you want to do some Lake Michigan fishing off the shores of Milwaukee or you are visiting any of the other of the inland seas. Wherever you are visiting, a charter boat can take you the best fishing on the Great Lakes.

While it's difficult to judge and opinions vary, many find that Lake Huron fishing is some of the best anywhere. Stretching from the east coast of Michigan all the way into northern Ontario, this big lake is home to thousands of square miles of open water where the fish are biting. Up in Ontario, many consider the waters of Georgian Bay to be some of the best fishing on the Great Lakes. This outlet of Lake Huron, often nicknamed the sixth great lake, is one of the top places in the world to fish for northern pike and walleye. The vast majority of Great Lakes islands are located in Georgian Bay west into Lake Huron.

Another top place to find walleye is along the northern coast of Lake Erie in Ohio. Plenty of Great Lakes fishing charters depart from the stretch between Sandusky and Cleveland to points west in search of this mild-yet-tasty whitefish. Even if you don't head out to sea, you can still order the locally caught fish at local restaurants or add a fish fry to your vacation plans. The town of Port Clinton hosts a walleye festival every Memorial Day weekend to celebrate its role as the self-proclaimed Walleye Capital of the World.

In Ohio and beyond, you'll find many ways to add Great Lakes fishing to your vacation. Besides heading out on a charter boat, you could head to a pier with a fishing pole, book one of the resort's fishing packages, or rent a cabin with your fishing buddies. You also can enter a fishing tournament if you want to prove your mettle and have some fun in the process. Lake Superior Minnesota and Superior Wisconsin are also great fishing destinations.

Off the shores of Toronto, anglers gather in droves for the Great Ontario Salmon Derby every July and August. Prizes, which are awarded throughout the tournament, which include cash, new trucks, and gear. Even though Toronto takes Lake Ontario fishing pretty seriously, people of every age and ability are invited to join this tournament. The other ten months of the year, there's plenty of chances to go fishing off the shores of Toronto, including ice fishing in the winter.
