Greektown Casino

Greektown Casino
Greektown Casino | MGM Grand Detroit | MotorCity Casino

As opposed to the other two major commercial Detroit casinos, the Greektown Casino has yet to open the doors to its new, permanent facility. But that shouldn’t dissuade visitors from dropping on by. The current Greektown Casino has 75,000 square feet of gaming space, not to mention an array of restaurants and live entertainment shows. The Greektown Casinos of old and new will soon be melded into one downtown mega-casino that is slated to open in the fall of 2008. Among the additions that will accentuate the Greektown Casinos are a new 3,500-space parking garage, a 30-story, 400-room hotel, a spa, 25,000 added square feet for conventions, a 1,500-seat theater, and 25,000 extra square feet of gaming room. The combined former and future Greektown casinos will remain at 555 E. Lafayette Avenue, in the heart of the exciting Greektown neighborhood.

The current Greektown Casino Detroit couldn’t enjoy a better neighborhood. Historic Greektown is a favorite downtown gathering place for both locals and visitors, offering over 20 restaurants and fun shops and cafes. In Greektown, you are just minutes from the major sporting arenas, such as the Joe Louis Arena, Comerica Park and Ford Field, not to mention the city’s theatre district and the largest convention centers in all of Michigan. The Greektown Casino Detroit is found just off the Detroit People Mover Greektown metro stop, meaning regardless of the season and weather, you can arrive in relative comfort. If you are driving, you can take advantage of the free valet service offered by the casino, or opt for the validated self-parking options found at the two different downtown parking garages that are within a block each of the casino. Parking in one of the neighborhood’s surface lots is also available for consideration. Be sure to contact the Greektown Casino staff ahead of time if you’d like to plan group events.

Of course, the majority of visitors to the Greektown Casino Detroit come to gamble, and here you can do it 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Strewn throughout the 75,000 square foot gaming area are slot machines, video poker machines, various table games and the popular poker room, which can sometimes be hard to get into. At the 2,500 slot and poker machines, you’ll find state-of-the-art, cutting edge machines that offer denominations from one penny on up to $100 a pop. Some of these slots are interlinked with other Greektown Casino machines, as well as with other area casinos, which means you could hit it real big if you’re lucky. The table games have just about everything you could ask for, from Blackjack and Three-Card Poker, to Roulette and Craps. If poker is your card, hit the city’s largest poker room, featuring 21 tables, both smoking and non-smoking. Plasma screen televisions keep fans aware of what is going on in the big game and you can grab wings and a drink at the convenient poker room bar. Visitors 21 and older should inquire about the CLUB Greektown Card, which can award various comps and credits throughout the casino’s facilities.

When it’s time to grab a bite, you can start by considering the mouth-watering dishes offered at the fine-dining Alley Grille Steakhouse. Both elegant and serene, the Alley Grille Steakhouse offers sumptuous steaks, scintillating seafood and delicious desserts. If it’s your birthday, the Alley Grille Steakhouse will offer you a free entree, and private parties are encouraged to celebrate their events here. Home-style cooking is on the menu at the award-winning Grapevine Café at the Greektown Casino. The giant-sized portions, from burgers to various sandwiches and comfort food selections, will more than satisfy even the largest appetite. After enjoying dinner, you can head to the Greektown Casino Apollo Lounge for some of the best local entertainment in the city. On Thursday nights, the all female cast of the show “Velocity” performs 3 different shows, with Motown hits and current pop songs among the performances. Show times are 8:00, 9:30 and 11:00 p.m. On Tuesday nights, “Blues Night” is on the Apollo Lounge agenda, featuring prominent acts, from locals to national visitors. Take note that there is a one drink minimum for all entertainment acts at the lounge. Also, be sure to check the Greektown Casino calender to see what’s on the agenda during your Detroit visit.

The Greektown Casino Detroit also features a gift shop, where you will find a diverse array of goods for sale. Casino gift certificates typically cover meals at the casino’s restaurants and Trapper’s Snack Bar. Plenty of downtown Detroit hotels can serve as your base for visits to the Greektown Casino, and Detroit’s other two commercial casinos, the MotorCity Casino and the MGM Grand Casino, are also found downtown, should you wish to see what they have to offer.
