Lake Huron Campground

A Lake Huron campground is easy to find along the eastern shore of Michigan. Up and down the coast, you'll find plenty of places where you can pitch a tent, park an RV, or sleep under the stars in some of the prettiest country in all of the Great Lakes region. While hearty souls enjoy Lake Huron camping all year, the majority of visitors plan their trips between May and October.

When Lake Huron camping is on your list of things to do, you will have many options of where to go. Several of the state parks are located right on the shores of the lake, complete with cabins and campgrounds. The 565-acre Lakeport State Park is home to two different Lake Huron campground sites, one on each side of the village of Lakeport. In total, this dual-unit park about 75 miles north of Detroit offers 250 modern campsites with electrical hook-ups, restrooms, and swimming pools, along with excellent views of the lake.

While the state parks are one option, the Lake Huron camping scene also offers plenty of privately owned and operated campgrounds. KOA, which has campgrounds all over North America, operates a campground along the shores of Lake Huron and the St. Clair River, just minutes away from Port Huron. Between May 1 and Halloween, campers are welcome. You'll find plenty to pack into your Great Lakes vacations among its 70 acres, including games, fishing, and even free wireless Internet.

In northern Michigan, but still south of the Upper Peninsula, vacationers enjoy wide-open spaces and plenty of opportunities for outdoor adventure. Many campgrounds are found in this scenic quadrant of Michigan, both big and small. After a day packed with Lake Huron fishing and fun, it is nice to retreat to a place close to the lake. Just minutes after stepping off the boat, you can have the day's catch prepared for dinner—fresh-caught walleye or salmon cooked over a fire taste so much different than the frozen stuff. Along the Sunrise Side Coastal Highway, which meanders some 200-miles along the shore from Mackinaw City to Standish, you'll enjoy easy access to the lake and its fun activities. No matter which Lake Huron campground you choose along this scenic route, the views are sure to be amazing.
