South Haven Michigan

South Haven

If you like blueberries, and fruit overall, make a stop at South Haven Michigan, self-proclaimed “Blueberry Capital of the World”. A small town gem about an hour’s drive due west of Battle Creek, South Haven boomed as a port in the early part of the 1900's, and people continue to visit year round, and enjoy summer fun in its deep harbor. Sandy Michigan beaches, pretty sunsets, and a charming atmosphere make South Haven Michigan a welcome getaway for busy folks looking to slow things down a bit. Located on the lower Lake Michigan coast, it is an easy find off major freeways, so bring the family here to pick your own blueberries and enjoy some maritime fun. Plenty of distinct South Haven rentals have your vacation accommodations covered.

At the Black River Harbor, visitors looking to get out on the water have over 1,200 boat slips to get their crafts sailing. At the port of South Haven, you’ll find great Michigan fishing where the usual catch is made up of trout, salmon, and perch. Fishing charters can get you out on the waters and their local knowledge will help you nab that big catch. Along the pier sits the South Haven  pier Lighthouse. It is a historical beacon laying claim to the once booming shipping port, and adds to the overall scenic appeal of the harbor. Built in 1903, it continues to welcome travelers to South Haven.

As logging in the South Haven area depleted much of the surrounding forestation, agricultural farmers began to move into the cleared lands to plant their crops. Today, agriculture is a big part of the economy and a prime tourist attraction for South Haven Michigan. Dozens of vegetable and fruit farms offer visitors the chance to tour the grounds and pick their own bounty. You’ll find some notable Michigan wineries near South Haven and romantic walks through area vineyards are a popular activity for couples. The National Blueberry Festival is held the second week in August, among the other summer events, and South Haven is a great place to celebrate the fourth of July with family and friends. If you’d like to sample some options for Michigan golf, there are three local courses, and within 25 minutes of South Haven, you’ll find numerous chances to hit the links.

Get outside for some nice Michigan hiking and some of the best Michigan biking in South Haven Michigan. Along the Kal-Haven Trail you’ll find some of Van Buren County’s most scenic sights along this 33-mile stretch. Be sure to visit the Michigan Maritime Museum found at South Haven for insight into the area’s shipping history. If the shopping bug hits you at some point, you’ll enjoy this popular pastime in the scenic downtown sector with its unique shops, some of whose buildings date back to the early 1900's. Plenty of dining options will keep you satisfied when hunger hits, whether you are looking for a romantic meal for two, or a spot the whole family will enjoy.

South Haven rentals surely deliver when it comes to lodging. On top of the various hotels and motels, you can choose from some nice Michigan bed and breakfasts, or rent a cottage. Outdoor purists can find options for Michigan camping at area campgrounds. Plenty of 3-4 bedroom vacation home and cottage rentals offer a great option for South Haven rentals and are perfect for your family or group. Many are complete with their own grounds for outdoor relaxation and offer easy access to the beach and downtown.
