Boundary Waters

Boundary Waters

More than one million acres of back country in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area makes this outdoor wonderland excellent for canoeing, kayaking and fishing. The protected wilderness area of Boundary Waters is unique as there are no power lines, roads or motorized vehicles allowed in the region making it a true, natural outdoor experience. The beautiful network of lakes has not changed very much since it was revealed more then 10,000 years ago after area glaciers melted.

Running for more then 150 miles along the western Canadian border, Boundary Waters offers an exceptionally beautiful backdrop for outdoor activities. Deep, transparent lakes, vaulting rock bluffs and numerous waterfalls all set the tone for fun things to do. Groups of deer, majestic moose, and beavers are only a few of the species of wildlife you might spot while taking a canoe ride.

The time to spot larger animals is the early morning or around sunset near the bogs on the different lakes. Loons, songbirds and ducks fill the air with their calls and you ‘re likely to see a bald eagle as the Boundary Waters Canoes area is home to one of the largest nesting ground for bald eagles.

When looking for Boundary Waters cabins for rent, you’re sure to find a good variety in choices. During the winter months these Minnesota cabins are perfect for skiing, hiking and dog sledding in the area. Remote cabins can be found through Boundary Waters Outfitters or from Gunflint Lodge. You can also find cabins for rent on Pelican Lake, Grand Marais and Cook Lake.

Boundary Waters cabins for rent from Gunflint Lodge flank Gunflint Trail, 63-miles of trails that lead from Minneapolis ending at Saganaga Lake in the Boundary Waters. Lakeside cabins include full kitchens, private baths and terrific views. At the lodge visitors can enjoy excellent dining, a sauna, laundry and an outfitting shop. Transportation along the scenic trail can be done solo or with a guide.

At Crane Lake in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Voyageurs National Park and Vermillion Lake both become accessible. Loon’s Echo on Crane Lake offers four Boundary Waters cabins for rent. These distinct log cabins are located remotely in a wooded area bordering 1300 feet of shoreline great for swimming. Nature photography, mountain biking, hiking, canoeing, snowshoeing and more are all possible in this all-season Minnesota resort.

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area contains thousands of portage-connected streams and lakes infused with forests, islands and natural escarpments. There are no signs leading the way so make sure to have a waterproofed map with you at all times! There are more then 1,200 miles of waterway routes that offer some of the most tranquil and serene backdrops in all of Minnesota. A simple four or five portages will lead you into the wilderness and take you away from all of the popular base camps where the less adventurous stay.

Boundary Waters fishing opportunities will delight avid anglers. With a short trip further into the wild there are many premium fishing spots to be explored. Lake trout, walleye, northern pike and smallmouth bass are among the most popular catches. Many of these prime fishing holes can only be reached by canoe so they are not fished-out whatsoever.

The closest drive to Boundary Waters is two Harbors or a little further from Duluth. They can both be good areas to stay and prepare for a wilderness trip. If you’re on the more spirited and adventurous side you’ll definitely find your own piece of paradise somewhere in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and feel like you’re a million miles from everywhere.
