While some people get their kicks from shopping and dining in cosmopolitan cities such as Minneapolis and Rochester, others’ prefer the more natural approach to their vacation with Minnesota camping trips. The allure of beautiful scenery and numerous things to do outdoors is one that sways people into camping in Minnesota. From Minnesota state parks camping to outdoor adventures in national forests, there are a wealth of areas perfect for a camping excursion.


Some of the many choices of Minnesota campgrounds include Voyageurs National Park, North Country National Scenic Trail and the Mississippi National River & Recreation Area near St Paul. Minnesota state park camping trips are an excellent way to enjoy the great outdoors and learn more about the history of different parts of the state. Rising rivers, lush, green forests and torrents of waterfalls are the backdrops in many of Minnesota’s state parks. Aside from camping, in Minnesota you can also rent cabins, guesthouses or stay at one of the many lodges.


Minnesota state parks camping in Blue Mounds State Park is full of surprises. The park is accessible from Luverne which is three hours southwest of Minneapolis. Rising 100 feet above the rolling prairie landscape the Sioux quartzite bluffs are a beautiful sight to see. Minnesota campgrounds here are rustic and natural and without modern amenities.


Bison graze throughout the prairie as flowers and prairie grasses dance in the wind, where Plains Indians once roamed, hunted and lived. Rock outcroppings throughout Blue Mounds make it ideal for rock climbing and hiking. Mountain biking around the area is fun and allows for greater exploration of the area. Minnesota state parks camping reservations can be made as late as the day prior to your arrival.


Fantastic Minnesota campgrounds can also be found in the Superior National Forest, due north of Two Harbors. Sixty-five picturesque campsites sit along the shores of Fall Lake where many water sports and other activities are possible. From the lake the Boundary Waters Canoe Area is directly accessible. Facilities available during Minnesota camping here include restrooms, picnic tables, tent pads, boat ramps and drinking water.


Convenient water craft rentals are also available at Fall Lake so you can enjoy canoeing or kayaking while camping in Minnesota. An onsite supplies store is also located on the campground complete with camping supplies and firewood. Excellent fishing opportunities lie offshore and on the lake. Events near these Minnesota campgrounds include the Blueberry Arts Festival showcasing local art, food and other fun activities.


Fox Lake Minnesota campgrounds in Bemidji are a family-owned facility offering lake views, lake side, wooded sites and pull through sites. This campground doubles as one of the many excellent Minnesota RV parks as well and is complete with full hook ups. Fishing and swimming is available as well as a playground, basketball and volleyball courts and a game room. The area is secluded and scenic providing an appealing backdrop for camping in Minnesota.


The best time for camping is from late spring through late fall when the weather is favorable. Winters are cold in Minnesota and unless you’re a die-hard outdoor enthusiast, you won’t be too impressed with the biting cold! Minnesota camping trips provide an excellent way to see the natural side of the state and enjoy plenty of fun things to do. Lush forests, sprawling prairies, natural rock formations, lakes and rivers afford complete and varied camping excursions.
