Minnesota Fishing

With so many diverse wilderness areas and inner-city lakes and rivers, Minnesota fishing is great all around the state. Fishing in Minnesota can produce the likes of northern pike, trout, salmon, crappy, small and large mouth bass, sunfish and more. Four definite season offer a variety of Minnesota fishing conditions so you can fish whenever you have the time. Minnesota walleye fishing is some of the best in the nation due to its northern situation. In the winter months Minnesota ice fishing is fantastic and there are many spots to fish outdoors or in a heated hut.

Due to the many choices for fishing in Minnesota, it's best to narrow down an area you’ll be visiting and scope out the possibilities in the region. If you’re planning on going for a day or two, choose a spot where you can enjoy other activities such golf, camping or, if you’re ice fishing, skiing trails nearby. There are many things to do of the outdoor variety in Minnesota so don’t miss out!

If you’re hoping to fish for trout during your Minnesota fishing trip there are a few key things to know. There are two different kinds of trout lakes for fishing in Minnesota. The first are called lake trout lakes and are home to their namesake. The second are called stream trout lakes which are home to brook, rainbow, brown and hybrid trout varieties. Primarily in the northeastern region, some as far as Rochester, trout lakes are popular with anglers who like this fish species for their fight, good looks and even better taste. Most of the trout lakes are in some of the most remote and scenic areas in Minnesota. Near Two Harbors at local streams and at Lake Superior you can catch both lake and stream trout. The north shore is great for fly fishing as well.

Minnesota walleye fishing is the most popular. Lake Winnibigoshish is found between Bemidji and Duluth and offers some of the best Minnesota walleye fishing around. Work the river bottom rocks with live bait rigs or bottom bouncers for the ultimate benefits along shallow ridges and sandbars. Head out to the deep waters where the biggest walleye feed for a possible mounter! At neighboring Lake Winnie, fishing in Minnesota can land you ample walleye as well as northern pike, muskie, largemouth bass, panfish and more. Some of the top ten lakes for walleye include Lake Pepin near Rochester, Lake of the Woods north of St Cloud and Mille Lacs close to the Mystic Casino.

Ice fishing in Minnesota is a favored pastime in the cold, winter months. Many people wouldn’t believe the great fishing opportunities found around the metro area of St Paul and Minneapolis. Rivers, lakes and trout streams can all be found nearby for excellent Minnesota ice fishing. Lake Calhoun is a favorite where anglers catch tiger muskie, crappie, bass and more. Minnesota ice fishing can also be enjoyed along the Mississippi River near the metro area, where history reigns and the fishing is great!

Minnesota ice fishing can also be enjoyed in many of the large wilderness areas such as Lake Vermillion, Voyageurs National Park and Boundary Waters Canoe Area. If you’re an angler you’re likely to love the outdoors and these three areas are unsurpassed when it comes to the wildest wilderness in Minnesota. You can take guided trips through the network of waterways or rent a canoe, grab a map and head out solo for one of the most impressive outdoor backdrops while fishing in Minnesota.
