The Dixie National Livestock and Rodeo Show is one of the wildest events to attend when visiting Mississippi. Kicking off in the state capital of Jackson the Dixie National Rodeo runs for 24 days at the Mississippi State Fairgrounds and sees thousands of people in attendance. Riding some of the best Harper and Morgan Rodeo stock Champion cowboys from all over the world compete for big jackpots. The best of the best of bull fighters, ropers,  rodeo clowns, barrel racers and bull-doggers come out in droves and keep crowds entertained with fast-paced action and antics.

On each day of the rodeo there are terrific entertainers featured such as Blake Shelton, Steve Holy and Miranda Lambert. Livestock shows happen every day at the Dixie National Livestock and Rodeo Show. Fierce competitions run neck-to-neck for hog shows, dairy shows, beef grooming, Angus and Lamb Showmanship, horse shows and much more! “The Southern Classic Horse Sale” and the horse expos are some of the more favored events with stunning horses of all kinds lined up for their moment of glory.

The Dixie National Rodeo happens in the coliseum with  more than 10 rodeos in all. This is the most exciting part of the Dixie Mississippi National Rodeo and one of the main reasons people join the celebrations if they’re not showing or selling livestock. The Dixie National Rodeo and Livestock Show Parade kicks off around the first week of February and is a colorful and fun affair.

There is also the highly competitive Dixie National Mississippi National Rodeo Queen Pageant which sees different categories of contenders aiming high for the big win. Also part of the Dixie Mississippi National Rodeo is the Dixie National Chili Round-Up which is another of the fun things to do during the rodeo and is held at the Mississippi Farmer’s Market. Skip dining out at a restaurant and try some delicious, award winning southern-style chili!

The Mississippi State Fairgrounds Coliseum is an up-to-date, all-season facility that seats up to 6,500 people for the Dixie National Rodeo. Complete with modern lighting and sound the ample complex see thousands waiting in anticipation for the rodeo to begin! Roping happens on one end while the other end is for bull chutes. Transportation to the grounds is easy through the city metro system, taxis or your own rental car.

Almost every type of livestock you can think of is shown at the Dixie National Livestock and Rodeo and top prizes are highly sought after by growers. After winning prizes many of the livestock varieties are auctioned off to buyers who go to the show in search of the best lamb, pork, poultry and beef. Some of the events charge a small admission fee so before to check before attending.

After the Mississippi State fair the Dixie Mississippi National Rodeo is the biggest event in Jackson. People as far as the southern cities of Biloxi and Gulfport make the long drive north for the best and most exciting rodeo in the state. With top-notch cowboys, longhorns and bucking broncos you might think that it’s the Wild West! Full of family fun there are things going on for all ages and the little ones will never complain of being bored.

If planning to visit the city during February make sure to book early as Jackson hotels tend to fill up quickly. If you’ve got gaming on your mind take a short drive north and hit some of the excellent Tunica casinos. Don’t miss other attractions in Jackson such as the Jackson Zoo, the Old Capital Museum, the beautiful Farish Street Historical District and more for a well rounded holiday in the city.
