Mississippi Campgrounds

Thousands of Mississippi visitors love the idea of pitching a tent or setting up an RV and allows a chance to explore outdoor attractions to their fullest during great camping in Mississippi. Regardless of your set up, whether it be a camper, RV, a trusty tent or simply sleeping underneath the beautiful Mississippi night sky Mississippi camping is bliss. Mississippi state parks campgrounds, national parks and local campgrounds offer sites from the most accessible to the truly secluded.

Mississippi state parks campground includes a state park ten miles north of the  historical town of Natchez. Being the oldest known settlement along the Mississippi River the area encompasses a wealth of history that can be unraveled by the many historic landmarks in the area. This Mississippi state parks campgrounds sites include three distinct areas,  two of which have been recently improved and one which is quite primitive.

The two better equipped sites include amenities such as barbeques, bathhouses, boat launch ramps, dump stations, a comfort station, showers and picnic tables perfect for dining under clear skies. Natchez Lake is great for swimming and lounging around.  Both of the improved Mississippi campgrounds are situated on concrete pads with full hookups and can be reached by paved roads. Great Mississippi fishing can be found here.

Camping in Mississippi around the Gulf Coast area is popular. Water adventures include great Mississippi fishing, snorkeling and scuba diving and the best part is the barrier islands, an area of the Gulf Islands National Seashore is accessible. Though only reached by ferry camping here provides a getaway from the crowded mainland. Mississippi campgrounds can be found on East Ship Island, Petit Bois and Horn Island year-round.

The best time to go is between June and October around the barren points where insects are not such a nuisance. Mississippi camping around the high dunes and lea side are best for protection from the wind. $16.00 per night is the going rate for Gulf Island sites with electricity while $14.00 will cover a night of Mississippi camping without electricity but check rates when planning.

The best hiking trails can be found on Horn Island which has the best blend of terrain with more than 14 miles of trails. Fishing is excellent in the area and the islands are well known for flounder, spectacled trout, mackerel and mullet. State laws apply but a license isn’t necessary. Fires can be built at these Mississippi campgrounds along the beach close to the sidelines and the ample driftwood can be used for firewood. In case of an emergency both Horn Island and East Ship Island have ranger stations which function throughout the year.

Another beautiful spot for camping in Mississippi is the well developed Big Biloxi Campground situated along the banks of the Big Biloxi River. All 25 campsites have electric hookups and water. Other amenities include a bathhouse with showers, a dump station, nature trails and a pavilion and picnic area. The campground can easily be reached from Gulfport but note that no reservations are accepted so arrive early! When camping in Mississippi here the grounds are open to campers from sunrise to sunset and gates open at 6:00am.

Camping is a great way to get outside with your family and explore the natural and beautiful side of Mississippi. There is an abundance of wildlife and an interesting variety of plants in most areas. If Mississippi casinos are of interest, camping in Biloxi or anywhere around the Gulf Coast will put you in close proximity to popular gaming destinations to add an exciting indoor element to your outdoor adventure!
