The Battle of Vicksburg is one of the reasons so many people decide on Vicksburg travel to discover the area. With estimated casualties around 20,000 the Army of the Tennessee and the Army of Vicksburg battled it out to the end in the summer of 1863. Major General Ulysses S. Grant made numerous failed attempts to take control of Vicksburg but Vicksburg's domination of the river, which stopped Union shipping, was a major obstacle for many and a crucial target for Grant.

The Confederate Army, under Lt. Gen. John Pemberton's command was entrapped by Grants's armies which came together after crossing the Mississippi River and took over the city in May of 1863. With the Confederate Army driven into defense lines around Vicksburg, Major General Ulysses S. Grant then attacked at full force from May 18th to July 4th 1863. On July 4th after extended siege efforts Vicksburg Mississippi surrendered in a climactic final stage and command of the Mississippi River went to the Union. Grants successes in the western areas eventually saw him appointed as the Union armies General in Chief.
