The comedy troupe that gave the world Saturday Night Live has moved far from its original home in Chicago. The show itself has also changed a bit - though their name is still synonymous with improv comedy, the Second City Las Vegas show offers two different formats: most of the time, the small cast of five plays through scripted sketches, much in the same format as SNL. Though it takes some of the danger and edge away from the Second City Comedy Vegas shows, it allows the writers and actors the ability to work with material that has been tested by audiences. It is a more reliable show - safer, yet always consistent. Unlike the shows in Chicago or Toronto, the Second City Comedy Vegas show will always generate laughs, as they are not dependent on audience members to provide decent suggestions.
For those that favor Second City improv comedy, however, there's still a show for you. Every Tuesday, the cast forgoes their sketches and allows the audience to direct the show. So regardless of your comedic preference, Second City Las Vegas will have a show for you. The Second City improv comedy shows also feature a separate cast - so you can see both types of shows if you really want (providing your stay in Las Vegas includes a Tuesday night).
Second City Comedy Vegas shows often sell out - due in part to the intimate and inviting theater that houses them, but also due to the continuing popularity of America's most celebrated and influential comedy group.
The show plays each night of the week at 8 pm except for Wednesday, and includes two shows on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays at both 8 and 10 pm. Tickets mirror the discount rates found throughout the Flamingo, allowing visitors the chance to experience the art and talent for around $50 for a 80-90 minute show.
The Second City improv comedy company counts some of the premiere names in comedy as alumni. Bill Murray, Rick Moranis, John Belushi, Chris Farley and Gilda Radner all got their start in the Chicago troupe, as well as current stars such as Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert and Amy Sedaris. And while the current Second City Las Vegas cast might not have anyone of this caliber, the talent necessary to join this vaunted comedy company should be enough to win over even the most skeptical of tourists. Second City are also located in its original Chicago home, along with Toronto, Los Angeles, New York and Detroit.
The main cast consists of Amanda Blake Davis, Paul Mattingly, Katie Neff, Andy St. Clair and Craig Uhlir, each of whom has spent years in honing their comedic talents. So catch them now, at the Flamingo Las Vegas, who knows which one could be tomorrow's household name?
