The Mount Washington Hotel is nestled among the peaks of the White Mountains, standing at the base of the highest peak in New England. A luxury hotel with modern amenities and classic New England ambiance, the Mount Washington has been welcoming guests since 1902. After a $50 million expansion, the four-season resort is even bigger and better with a spa, canopy tour, new pool complex and a completely renovated golf course to match its luxury accommodations, dining, and skiing—all 90 minutes from Boston.
This heavily forested slice of New Hampshire was part of a land grant given in 1772 by John Wentworth, a British Royal Governor. He called it Bretton Woods after his family home in Yorkshire. It wasn’t until the beginning of the 20th century that the hotel became reality. Founder Joseph Stickney had made his money in the railroad and in coal mining. He spared no expense for his hotel, employing 250 expert craftsmen brought over from Italy. From its opening in 1902, the Mount Washington Hotel attracted dignitaries, presidents, and celebrities as well as families and others looking for a vacation with style. One of the most important chapters in the hotel’s history happened in 1944 when the International Monetary Conference came to set the gold standard and make U.S. currency the standard for international transactions. In the years since, the resort has grown even bigger and better with the addition of more space and more visitor amenities.
Along with comfortable guestrooms, the hotel has everything you need to enjoy a full-fledged vacation. The spa and salon covers 25,000 square feet with space to relax. When it’s time to keep active, you’ll find a long list of fun. The 18-hole golf course, designed by the legend Donald Ross, was updated during the hotel’s last major update—the same work that added the zip-line tours, available in all four seasons. In the wintertime, the resort has facilities for sleigh rides, snowshoeing, and skiing, both downhill and Nordic. When the weather is warm, resort guests enjoy hiking, horseback riding, and tennis, along with other leisure activities. The Mount Washington Hotel is also home to a host of restaurants, serving both casual and gourmet fare. Two of the restaurants have earned four diamond status and another used to be a speakeasy back in the day.
