Atlantic City’s historic Wheaton Village is a large arts center featuring glass art and craft demonstrations, a museum, and stores featuring unique and beautiful glass and craft gifts handmade at the Wheaton Arts and Cultural Center. The mission of Wheaton Village is to preserve the South New Jersey tradition of glass and craft making by demonstrating their craftsmen’s skills to the public and putting the blown glass art, among other things, on display in the Wheaton Village art glass gallery.
One of the most exciting aspects of the Village of Wheaton
is their famed Museum of American Glass where visitors
can experience a panorama of 6,500 different glass-art
objects on display in sun-lit galleries. The museum displays
blown glass art and glass art work as well as utilitarian
glass objects from a variety of different periods and
maintains exhibits from the early glass period, the 19th
century, the Victorian periods, the Art Nouveau, and on
up into contemporary times. Visitors will be amazed to
watch Wheaton Village craftsmen demonstrate glass blowing
techniques where they are able to create beautiful blown
glass art from what look like blobs of molten glass.
The Wheaton Arts and Cultural Center is also an important center for New Jersey artists as well as artists from around the world interested in preserving the tradition of glass art work. Wheaton Village offers 12 fellowships per year to artists working in glass from all over the globe and perseveres in their attempt to preserve blown glass art techniques and to innovate new ones in their workshops.
Besides blown glass art, the Village of Wheaton also maintains a center called the Down Jersey Folklife Center, dedicated to preserving expressive folk-life traditions of South New Jersey. Programs at the Folklife Center include research projects, ongoing displays and exhibits, music, dance, craft demonstrations and workshops presenting traditional artistry and folk-life.
Visitors to Wheaton Village will be glad to note that there is no admission fee to shop or stroll through the Wheaton Arts and Cultural Center except during outdoor events. Visitors can feel free to browse the unique and wonderful blown glass art and craft items and are encouraged to ask questions about any and all items for sale. The Village of Wheaton also offers free parking, and is open Tuesday - Sunday 10am - 5pm during the summer, and open Friday, Saturday and Sunday 10am - 5pm during the winter (January - March).
