Long Beach Island

Long Beach Island, located 25 miles north of the Atlantic City beaches and casinos, seems tailor-made for summertime fun. This barrier island is home to sugar-sand beaches, bustling resort communities, amusement parks, welcoming New Jersey Beach hotels, fresh seafood, and every thing else needed for the perfect summertime getaway.

Many, if not most, vacationers include time at Long Beach Island beaches during their seaside getaways. With much of the coastline set aside for the public, it's no wonder that so many people flock here with the weather's warm and the days are long. Several towns, including Surf City, Long Beach Township, Harvey Cedars, and Beach Haven manage miles and miles of shoreline, employ lifeguards, and provide visitor amenities.

When trying to determine the best beaches on Long Beach Island, different travelers will come up with varying answers. With eighteen miles of white-sand beaches, swimmers, surfers, people watchers, and sunbathers will find the perfect New Jersey beaches to enjoy no matter what they like.

Island Beach State Park is consistently one of the best beaches on Long Beach Island. Lifeguards are on duty during the summer, watching over a mile of wide, sugar-white sandy beaches. While the park is a wonderful place to enjoy the typical beach activities like swimming, surfing, and sunbathing, it's also a living museum, preserving pristine coastal dunes by the thousands of acres. Some of the visitor amenities include well-equipped bathhouses, nature programs, beach access ramps, bike paths, and a network of trails that wind through the dunes.

One of the most famous lighthouses along the Jersey shore is found nearby in another state park. The Barnegat Lighthouse, lovingly called Old Barney, is open for tours. In the town called Barnegat Light, visitors can soak in the sun at two Long Beach Island beaches including Bay Beach, which is popular with families, and Ocean Beach, a fine place for swimming and sunbathing.

When answering the question about the best beaches on Long Beach Island, surfers will likely say Barnegat Light, Surf City, The Dunes, and Spray Beach. In total, eighteen beaches are available for this active sport, giving surfers plenty of room to find the perfect wave.

Every year, the Long Beach Island beaches set the backdrop for one of the biggest fishing tournaments held anywhere. The Long Beach Island Surf Fishing Tournament stretches on for weeks in October and November, with thousands of dollars of prizes and anglers all ages getting caught up in the fun. Even if visitors aren't participating in the tournament, the fishing is good outside of winter. The ocean beaches, bay, inlets, and jetties are home to bluefish, striped bass, and other sport fish worthy of a few fish tales. Those interested in fishing charters can look to the nearby community of Belmar Beach, where many trips originate.

While the island is perfectly suited for summertime escapes, a vacation to Long Beach Island can take place no matter what the temperature. Many New Jersey beach hotels are open year-round and offer great rates in the shoulder seasons. With a wide variety of shops, restaurants, and fun things to do, there will be plenty to include in the plans. One of the island's cultural treasures, Tuckerton Seaport, is a living history village that preserves and shares life on the Jersey Shore. An array of exhibits, tours, and demonstrations keep this way of life going.
