Taos New Mexico

Taos New Mexico

Taos New Mexico is in an area laden with broad mesas, aerial mountains with a history dating back about 6,000 years. The primary 3 cultures of Taos New Mexico are the Indian, Spanish and the Anglo who live harmoniously in the city with a reputation as a world renowned art community. The Rio Grande Gorge in Taos New Mexico is a famed tourist destination in the area and is an impressive and dizzying paradigm of physical geography. The bridge that sweeps across the gorge is the second highest in the country and visitors can get a great view of it with a hot-air balloon ride above and even inside the gorge. This area has plenty of things to do and many attractions located within the town and the outskirts.

If you want to ski Taos, the ski area is not too far from the downtown core. The fusion of arid desert climate and high elevation provides skiers with radiant sunshine and dry, light snow which some who ski Taos consider to be the perfect conditions. Thousands of people ski Taos every year so it’s important to make reservations and bookings ahead of time to ensure you receive the amenities you desire.

Perhaps the most famous Taos ski resort is the one founded by Ernie Blake appropriately named Taos Ski Valley. Blake was born in Germany and raised near the ski resort of St. Moritz. He founded the Taos ski resort, Taos Ski Valley, in 1955 with his wife Rhoda. The average snow fall at the Taos ski resort is 300 inches and the sun shines on for more then 300 days every year. This Tao ski resort has no mob scene unlike many other popular ski resorts. There's plenty of room for the novice and intermediate skier to better their skills without feeling crowded by others

Taos travel along the access route from town to the mountain can be an arduous one depending on the weather conditions and can be a busy route, especially during peak ski season. Some people prefer lodging in town because of its colorful flavor while others feel the drive impedes on optimal skiing time. Many hotel shuttles offer transportation to and from the ski hill. It's just a matter of personal choice.

As for an alternative ski hill in Taos travel to Angelfire which is about 24 miles east of Taos and has 68 trails to explore and almost 2,100 feet of vertical terrain. Taos travel amid the Taos ski area can sometimes be hectic with the many skiers about but the incredible backdrop and great ski hills make it a hit year after year.

If savoring southwestern flavor is on the agenda, then opt to stay in town which is still well within the Taos ski area. When planning your Taos trip there are many lodging options available. Dobson House, a top-rated bed and breakfast is decorated with Southwestern flair and solely solar powered which is popular with eco-friendly tourists. It's located in downtown Taos and is a 6,000 sq. ft. lodge with beautiful views of the Rio Grande. Nearby attractions in Taos include the Rio Grande Gorge, Taos Pueblo, the Enchanted Circle scenic drive and many museums and galleries.

Another consideration when deciding on accommodation for your Taos experience is The Casa de Las Chimeneas or House of Chimneys. It's a charming, luxuriously restored adobe style inn with top-rated guest amenities, dining and many other services and has been awarded the Four Diamonds AAA designation. It's based in a soothingly quiet area yet is only 2 1/2 blocks from the historic downtown Taos Plaza and near the Taos ski area.
