Adirondack Mountains

Adirondack Mountains

The Adirondack State Park consists of six million acres of beautiful mountains, stunning scenery, an abundance of wildlife, and a variety of attractions. Whether you want to do some rugged hiking or stay in luxurious Adirondack Mountains resorts, the mountain range has something for everyone.

Adirondack Mountains resorts range from primitive cabins with few extras beyond running water and electricity to five star resorts. Somewhere in the middle is the Sagamore Hotel, located at Bolton Landing of Lake George. The midrange historical hotel offers a spa, an indoor pool, a fitness center, six tennis courts, a rock climbing wall, and a mini golf course. Visitors can choose between upscale rooms, basic lodges that are well suited for families on a budget vacation, or accommodations in a castle. Dining options include a tapas bar, a turn-of-the-century dining room, and a pub.

Adirondack camping trips are a great way to spend a summer vacation. There are several campgrounds throughout the Adirondack mountains that are suitable for both RV and tent camping. Many Adirondack camping parks offer camp sites with water and electrical hookups. The Adirondack Camping Village is a family owned campground located on the northern part of Lake George Village. The campground features 165 campsites (70 with water and electrical hookups), three restrooms with hot showers, laundry facilities, and a store. For entertainment, they offer a heated pool, a playground, and daily hay rides. Like most Adirondack camping facilities, Adirondack village is open from May until September.

If you want to learn more about the history of Adirondack New York, take a visit to the Adirondack Museum, located right off of Blue Mountain Lake. The museum features paintings of the region, exhibits about mining, boating and logging, and live demonstrations. They offer fun events, such as the rustic furniture fair in September. Children under seven are admitted for free. The museum is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. from Memorial Day weekend up until the middle of October.

The Adirondack Mountains are best explored by car. The western part of Adirondack New York can be accessed by interstate 81 going north out of Watertown. You can also drive along the scenic Adirondack Northway, which extends all the way to Canada. Another option for transportation is the Amtrak train. Trains depart from Penn Station in New York City and travel up to Adirondack New York and all the way up to Montreal.

Roads that wind through Adirondack New York and the Catskill Mountains can be extremely icy in the winter, so it's a good idea to check road conditions before making your trip. If you're interested in learning some essential outdoor skills, such as mountain climbing, canoeing, or camping, the Adirondack Mountain Club offers frequent workshops.

From enjoying the scenery from the balconies of Adirondack Mountains resorts to hiking in the wilderness, the Adirondack mountains are a great option for last minute vacations from New York City, Syracuse, Rochester, or elsewhere.
