Lake Placid Fishing

Lake Placid fishing opportunities abound and the lake, along with the renowned Ausable River and adjacent Mirror Lake, are three of the most revered angling destinations in New York. Ice fishing Is restricted in Lake Placid though. Instead, head to nearby Lake Champlain where the inlets and bays freeze over in early December. Throughout the year, Lake Champlain is a celebrated honey hole for smallmouth bass, speckled trout, norther pike, and yellow perch.

Lake Placid fly fishing is legendary within the Ausable River, which flows down from the Adirondack Mountains. The upper part of the Ausable is divided into East and West which meet again at a junction called Au Sable Forks. It is the western section that is traditionally the best spot to fly fish. When the water runs high, white water rafting comes in a close second to Lake Placid fly fishing. The Adirondack town of North Elba is home to a stretch of these fabled waters and is a great place to cast a line.

Wilmington, slightly northeast of the lake, is another ideal access point to Ausable’s twisting, twirling waters. Going it alone or taking a guide are two viable options when fly fishing on the river. The advantage of a guide is their solid knowledge of the river’s ins and outs. There are plenty of vacation deals that offer fishing discounts. Rainbow trout is the top catch in the river while Lake Placid is home to trophy brown, lake, and brook trout.

Lake Placid fishing vacations equate to world-class angling opportunities. Many anglers get a group together to rent cabins or stay in resorts or hotels along the lakeshore. Within the reservoir there are also white crappie and largemouth bass, along with spotted bass, channel catfish (best yields in cooler months), and some blue catfish. Abundant numbers of redear, a variety of sunfish, and bluegill are other fish species commonly caught during Lake Placid fishing excursions.
