Mohonk Mountain House

The Mohonk Mountain House is truly one of America’s greatest resorts. The main structure of this legendary retreat dates back to 1869 and is a Victorian masterpiece. Only serving to complement the resort itself is its divine location. The Mohonk Mountain House sits atop a rocky ridge and overlooks glacial Lake Mohonk. Guests also enjoy views of the well-manicured gardens that adorn the grounds and can see out over the neighboring Mohonk Forest Preserve. Off in the distance to the north loom the Catskill Mountains. It is a setting to relish in and a lodging experience that is not soon to be forgotten. Better yet, meals, afternoon tea and cookies, and most activities are included in the overnight rates at the Mohonk Mountain House, so guests have little to worry about when planning their stays.

History

The history of the Mohonk Mountain House begins with an 1869 visit to Shawangunk Ridge by Albert Smiley. So inspired by the splendid setting was Albert that he and his twin brother Alfred made a decisive move and purchased 280 acres of land. Quickly, the pair went to work developing their grand New Paltz, New York resort. Thanks to its overall allure, the Mohonk Mountain House has hosted more than its fair share of distinguished guests. Also, numerous annual conferences on International Arbitration were held at the resort until 1916. These conferences were certainly the cause for famous guest visits, and they also served as an impetus for the Hague Conference movement. In turn, this movement was among the inspirations for the creation of The United Nations. The Mohonk Mountain House founders, it is important to note, were devout Quakers who had a deep interest in the cause of peace.

Since its founding, the Mohonk Mountain House has been continually owned and operated by Smiley family members. The family has been awarded for their environmental awareness over the years and continues the cause by hosting environmentally-based meetings at the resort. They also continue to honor a reciprocal agreement that was made in the past. This agreement allows for Mohonk Forest Preserve members to visit the resort grounds even if they aren’t staying there. Provided that they obtain a pass, other day visitors can also visit the Mohonk Mountain House and enjoy its grounds and well-maintained hiking trails.
