Mountain Jam is one of the premiere music festivals in the United States and is wide considered to be the best festival of its kind in the Northeast. The three-day event takes place in Hunter, New York, which is ensconced in mountainous state parks. The festival itself is staged at the Hunter Mountain Ski Resort on the weekend after Memorial Day. Mountain Jam 2011 will continue the tradition of amazing entertainment that has been a hallmark of this festival since its inception in 2005. The fact that the host venue is a ski resort means that people have access to many facilities and amenities that are simply not available at similar festivals that are held outdoors exclusively. The Mountain Jam Festival New York dubs itself an independent music festival. The range of music consists of a many genres but tends to highlight what might be called “jam bands” and groups that have a certain folk or even country influence. One only needs to look at some of the past performers to get a feel for what kind of entertainment to expect at Mountain Jam. The festival is sponsored by local radio station WDST (Radio Woodstock) and Warren Haynes of the Allman Brothers and Gov’t Mule. Gov’t Mule has a strong presence at the festival and other past performers include Levon Helm, the Avett Brothers, Derek Trucks, and Matisyahu. Just by looking at this list you can get a sense for the diversity of the music that is presented, even within the independent paradigm.

There are a variety of options for purchasing tickets to Mountain Jam. You can buy single-day passes to any day, VIP passes to any day, and there are also festival passes with and without camping. Amazing campsites and state parks surround this area of New York and you can save money and enjoy all of the entertainment by taking advantage of the low-cost camping option. This is truly the best way to enjoy the festival. The music starts early. There are two outdoor stages so that there is no overlapping music, as well as two indoor stages. Guests have access to a large indoor bar, nice restrooms, and a range of other amenities and facilities.
Directions to Mountain Jam
The Hunter Mountain Ski Resort is situated two hours north of New York City in the Catskill Mountains. You can reach the grounds from Exits 19, 20, or 21 off of the New York State Thruway. It is approximately a half hour drive from any of these exits. You should have no difficult find the grounds, as the roads are well-marked.
