The Jacob Javits Convention Center is currently the largest and most renowned convention center in New York City. This could change in the near future if plans to build a new convention center in Queens are realized and the Jacob Javits Center site is redeveloped with apartments and commercial space. There are also proposed plans to expand the Jacob Javits Convention Center and to continue its use as a major event facility. Time will tell what ultimately happens. It should be mentioned that the Jacob Javits Center itself replaced what was formerly the city’s main convention center–the New York Coliseum.
Work on the Jacob Javits Convention Center began in 1980 and was completed in 1986. The rather revolutionary structure was designed by I.M. Pei and partners and can be found on the far West Side of Manhattan. The more specific location is 11th to 12th Avenues between 38th and 34th Streets. That puts the Jacob Javits Convention Center right on the east bank of the Hudson River and very close to the Lincoln Tunnel. In relation to size, the center offers nearly 700,000 square feet of exhibit space and can handle up to six events at any given time. The amount of visitors that can be accommodated at the same time is 85,000. Getting to the Jacob Javits Convention Center area is possible via the buses, taxis, ferries, and hotel shuttles. Also, Penn Station isn’t very far away. For those who are driving over, the center lacks its own parking, though nearby lots and garages are available.
Anyone who is interested in Jacob Javits Convention Center hotels is encouraged to consider the hotels near Penn Station and Madison Square Garden. Also a good option are the Times Square hotels. While it might be possible to find hotels that are closer to the center, the hotels in these recommended areas offer proximity to more restaurants, shops, and services and are arguably more attractive in the long run. Also, don't rule out other areas of Manhattan, since the trains and subways make travel with the borough fairly convenient. You might even consider Jacob Javits Convention Center hotels just across the river in New Jersey.
