Show Description:
Colorful and imaginative, Mary Poppins follows the story of a nanny employed by a wealthy Edwardian-era English family. The story follows her role in looking after the Banks families out of control children Jane and Michael. Such is the remarkable character of Marry Poppins that magic and adventure soon follow as rewards for the children’s good behavior. Mary Poppins the musical takes you through the streets and rooftops of an Edwardian-era industrial London while centering on the problems of the Banks family. The story has an underlining message regarding family values and is brought out through the dynamic adventures of the children and their ‘perfect’ nanny. These adventures are essentially brought to life through the introduction of a number of colorful characters. Bert, a cheery working class chimney sweep is perhaps the most prominent and rescues the children from their exploration of the working class slums of East London.

Mary Poppins Broadway showcases some fantastic songs and choreography all the while sounding like a cockney Londoner ought to. Most well known is the song ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’. Such is the varied and impressive choreography throughout the show that the production won a 2005 Tony Award for their efforts. Scenes of dancing chimney sweeps set against the backdrop of a London skyline have won the show a number of awards and accolades. Reflected in the set designs and costumes Mary Poppins the musical is very much a tribute to the Edwardian-era London that the story is set. The show takes the audience through wealthy suburban neighborhoods and upper class recreational pursuits to the darker depths of a working class industrial city.

The production is no doubt a classic Broadway musical and is definitely one for the family. Younger audiences will enjoy the variety and up tempo cheerful music and dancing. Mary Poppins tickets begin at about $150.
