Museum of Modern Art

Museum of Modern Art

The New York Museum of Modern Art has a rich and sentimental history dating back to 1929, when Mrs. John D. Rockefeller, Jr., along with two other influential arts patrons--- Miss Lillie P. Bliss and Mrs. Cornelius J. Sullivan---found the conservative museums and collections to be lacking. They wanted to offer something more to the community of New York art museums, something inclusive of modern art (which includes any work from the late 19th century to the present), and together founded The Museum of Modern Art New York, a tradition-breaking institution among New York art museums.

From its humble beginnings as recipient of eight prints and one drawing, The New York Museum of Modern Art has grown to include over 150,000 paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs, architectural models and drawings, and design objects.

An impressive lineup of modern artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Jackson Pollack, and Andy Warhol are featured here. This world-class museum includes a special emphasis on film media, and owns more than 22,000 films, videos, and media works, as well as film stills, scripts, posters and historical documents. The New York Museum of Modern Art also rotates its expansive collection on a regular basis to ensure as fresh a viewing experience as possible, even for regular museum-goers.

Located in midtown Manhattan between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, the Museum of Modern Art New York is conveniently situated near Rockefeller Center and is open every day of the year except Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Four different museum-wide audio tours are available, and there is a café, museum library, and museum store on the premises. The New York Museum of Modern Art offers several educational programs for kids of all ages, in an effort to introduce children to the rich and varied world of modern art.

The Museum of Modern Art New York is easily accessible by car, bus, or taxi, and is handicapped-accessible. As in other New York City public buildings, all visitors are subject to search, and must check in bags 11 x 14 inches in size or larger. To avoid extra waiting time, museum visitors are encouraged not to bring such items.

The Museum of Modern Art New York, a leader among New York art museums, is a vital part of New York City’s cultural experience, as it not only highlights the progressive works of artists and time-periods past, but projects us into the future with innovative and mold-breaking works of today.
