New York Yankees and Yankee Stadium

The New York Yankees are one of the most successful teams in major league baseball history. With 26 World Series championships and 39 American League Pennants in their 100+ year history, this New York baseball team is the epitome of the professional athletics phrase “dynasty”. Consistently one of the most popular teams in the nation, the Bronx Bombers are often referred to as “America’s Team”. One of two professional New York baseball teams, the other being the New York Mets of the National League, the New York Yankees are the only team to have representation in every playing position in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Though there is no way to prove which team was the greatest in the history of baseball, commentators have claimed four different Yankee teams (the 1927, 1939, 1961, and 1998 squads) have deserved that distinction.

The New York Yankees play in Yankee Stadium, located in the Bronx borough of New York City. Built in 1923, Yankee Stadium was baseball’s first triple-decked stadium, housing an incredible 58,000 at the time (though officially 74,200 fans packed Yankee Stadium for its inaugural game on April 18, 1923). It is often referred to as “the House that Ruth Built” due to the incredible drawing power of the world’s most well-known New York Yankee, Babe Ruth. So many World Series have been staged at the stadium that it’s also become knows as “The Home of Champions”, and many a stellar New York Yankee has graced its interior.

It’s not just New York baseball that Yankee Stadium is known for. New York sports fans have had the opportunity to attend numerous sporting events in the stadium, including college and pro football, boxing, and soccer. Several cultural events such as concerts, religious conventions, and political assemblies have been held there as well. One of the most memorable football games that have taken place in Yankee Stadium was the November 12, 1928 game in which Notre Dame went on to beat Army 12-6 after Knute Rockne gave his legendary “win one for the Gipper” speech. Another was the 1958 NFL Championship Game, sometimes referred to as the “Greatest Game Every Played,” when Johnny Unitas led the Baltimore Colts to a dramatic victory over the New York Giants, helping establish pro football as a major sport. The stadium has also been home to thirty boxing championships, including the famous 1938 Joe Louis victory over Germany’s Max Schmeling. Yankee Stadium even hosted Pope Paul VI when he celebrated mass before an 80,000+ crowd in 1965.

With over 70 home games per regular season, fans that want to catch a New York Yankees game have no shortage of games they may attend. Additionally, Yankee Stadium tours are also available during most of the year, and one can learn all about their favorite New York Yankee and get a first-hand glimpse behind the scenesof this New York sports stadium. All in all, to experience New York baseball, and New York sports, at its finest, a trip to Yankee Stadium will make for a lifetime memory.
