Show Description:
Embroiled in controversy, Spring Awakening takes inspiration from an 1891 contentious German play by Frank Wedekind. Originally banned, the play took on very adult themes surrounding sex, rape, abortion and suicide. The Spring Awakening Broadway production follows two central characters Wendla Bergmann and Melchior Gabor. The plot explores issues of adolescent teenagers frustrated with a conservative society and balancing a perceived lack of knowledge about dealing with issues confronting them as they grow up into adulthood. The story is very much of a sexual nature and inevitably two of the central characters, Wendla and Melchior, cross paths and cannot help but relish the opportunity to express their desires with each other.

Running parallel is the tragic situation of Moritz Stiefel and Martha who separately are dealing with issues of parental abuse and sexual frustration.

In confidence and encouraged by his friend Melchior, Moritz asks for an essay explaining his friend’s erotic desires in order to learn from it as a form of sexual education. Through Moritz frustrations he soon realises that he’s becoming increasingly un-satisfied with his inability to fulfil these sexual temptations. Meanwhile, Martha, a teenage girl tells of her plight that her father physically abuses her. In a moment of despair brought on by his school Headmaster failing him for an exam, Moritz commits suicide. In a cruel twist, Melchior is blamed for his friend’s death and expelled from school. Matters become more complicated as Wendla discovers she is pregnant but then cruelly dies from ammonia.

Feeling like life no longer holds anything for him, Melchior becomes resided to join his friend and lover. In a final twist Melchior is encouraged to live his life and the show comes out from despair to deliver an optimistic note of hope and existence.

Spring Awakening endeavours to break down social barriers and discuss such contentious issues that would usually never get mentioned, especially in the era that the original play was written. A brave and compelling musical Spring Awakening Broadway is a Rock n Roll music production with bite. Standard Spring Awakening tickets cost about $100 to over $300, depending on where your seat is located. Seats are also available on stage! The show has much adult content. It is recommended for mature audiences and maybe inappropriate for younger teenagers and under.
