Poughkeepsie New York

Poughkeepsie New York

Poughkeepsie New York is often referred to as the “Queen of the Hudson” because of its location on the Hudson River. The town has a population of around 75,000 people and is home to Vassar College, which lends a relaxed, laid-back feel to the city. Poughkeepsie New York is a two hour drive from New York City. It is also located near the Catskill Mountains as well as the Adirondack Mountains. Although Poughkeepsie has undergone tremendous revitalization efforts through the years, it was once subject to economic decay during the late 1980s. Scenic views as well as a variety of Poughkeepsie attractions make it an ideal place to take a vacation.

Poughkeepsie travel can be spent visiting area attractions or events. The Cunneen-Hacket Arts Center, located on 9 and 12 Vassar Street, is the place to go to view sculptures, paintings, and photography by local artists. The museum also offers occasional musical and dance performances, films, events, and lectures. The exhibits are constantly changing, so be sure to visit the museum every time you take a Poughkeepsie vacation.

Live music seems to be popular in Poughkeepsie New York, probably due to the presence of Vassar College. The Chance Theatre, located at 6 Channel Street, is the main place in town to view a variety of live musical performances, such as rock & roll, heavy metal, and country music acts by nationally acclaimed artists.

Although it’s rare to visit a post office unless you are mailing a letter, the Main Post Office on 55 Mansion Street is considered a National Historic Landmark and is considered one of the main Poughkeepsie attractions worth visiting by Poughkeepsie travel enthusiasts. Visitors can learn about the history of Poughkeepsie New York by viewing the building’s famous murals, photographs, and architecture.

If you’re looking for Poughkeepsie attractions that will keep your family busy during a wintertime Poughkeepsie vacation, head to the Mid Hudson Civic Center, located at 4 Civic Center Plaza. The Civic Center contains a large indoor ice arena and offers several trade shows, entertainment performances, and other programs.

Tourists taking a Poughkeepsie vacation should be aware of the tax-free shopping on footwear and clothing. The Galleria, located on Route 9, is a large mall that contains around 150 stores. The South Hills Mall contains retail shops, a food court, and a movie theater with ten screens. The Poughkeepsie Plaza offers a Farmer’s Market from July through October. For more fresh food, visit the family-owned Adams Fairacre Farms, located on the Dutchess Turnpike. The farm has been selling fresh cheese, mean, seafood, and bakery goods for over one hundred years. The many shopping opportunities coupled with Poughkeepsie attractions makes Poughkeepsie travel enjoyable no matter what time of year you decide to visit.
