Show Description:
Based on the Mel Brooks 1974 film starring Gene Wilder, Young Frankenstein is a musical comedy about a young surgeon professor who inherits his grandfather’s legacy and strives to achieve something he did not, to create a monster. Along with his loyal helper Igor and sexy lab assistant Inga, the Young Frankenstein embarks on his work set amongst his family’s Transylvania home. On galvanizing his family’s business, Young Frankenstein at last completes his grandfather, Victor von Frankenstein’s work. Having exhumed a corpse of a dead criminal from the village cemetery Frankenstein now must find a brain to complement the body. Unfortunately, for him, his attempts do not end well as they liberate a brain from the local Brain Depository labeled ‘Do Not Use – Abnormal’. The resulting experiments often end in terrifying and funny consequences.
The show is very much an adaptation of the comedy horror classic and showcases much of the plot from the preceding 1974 movie. Scenes are expanded with musical endeavor and with particular humor from producer Mel Brooks. Popular among the shows chorus lines are songs ‘Transylvania Mania’ and ‘Putting on the Ritz’. The show has moments that are very much as dramatic and eerie as any of the original film productions yet this take on the horror classic promises moments of fresh un-compromising often amusing entertainment. Billed as a musical extravaganza many of the chorus lines are witty and bright. Inventive lively choreography and special effects lift the songs and facilitate the smutty humor and ridiculous behavior of the characters, of which Igor proves the most likable and funny. Set pieces recreate Transylvania and the grand family castle. While experiments in the laboratory go awry, scenes flick between the dramatic from cries of ‘it’s alive’ to the silly and sexy courtesy of assistant Inga. Young Frankenstein Broadway is very much a musical comedy throughout for which Mel Brooks fans will enjoy particularly and all others no doubt with enjoyment.

Artists/Show Biography:
Created by Grammy and Tony award winner Mel Brooks (producer, composer and writer) Young Frankenstein Broadway opened to New York audiences in November 2007 directed and choreographed by Susan Stroman. Many of the creative team behind the hit show The Producers certainly give the production a good foundation for success, although recent reviews suggest that the show doesn’t quite live up to that earlier smash hit. Nevertheless, the show will prove well liked among Mel Brooks cult followers. The 1974 comedy film from which the show draws inspiration is continually voted in the top 50 of greatest comedy films of all time. Brooks is also famous for his work on films such as Spaceballs, Blazing Saddles and Robin Hood Men in Tights. A relatively new show to New York’s Broadway, Young Frankenstein is picking up a reputation as an enjoyable piece of spoof comedy theatre.
