Discovery Place Museum

The Discovery Place Museum is located in Charlotte, North Carolina, and is one of the top science and technology museums in the country. The theme at the Discovery Place Charlotte is hands-on, making this a favorite destination for children and families in particular. The Discovery Place Museum is open Monday through Friday from 9am until 4pm, Saturday from 10am to 6pm, and on Sundays from noon until 5pm. Admission prices for Charlotte Discovery Place are $15 for adults and $12 for children ages 2-13, or adults aged 60+. You can also combine admission with the IMAX feature film by adding $5 to each ticket. Children under age 2 are free, and tickets can be purchased in person and online.
The Discovery Place Museum has multiple permanent exhibits to enjoy, as well as a host of changing attractions and themes to make sure that no two visits are every exactly the same. The Discovery Place Charlotte is home to an enormous OMNIMAX theater, mirrored after the nation's first IMAX Theater at the Oregon Museum of Science and Technology in Portland, Oregon.
Charlotte Discovery Place is busiest during the summer and on the weekends, when children are out of school. If you are on vacation in Charlotte and happen to have time during the week to visit Discovery Place Charlotte, you should take advantage of that time. Weekdays are a great time to visit Discovery Place since the lines will be shorter or even non-existent. It usually takes between 2-3 hours to see everything at the Discovery Place Museum, so this can be a great activity for a rainy afternoon or mid-morning. If you have extra time, you might also consider checking out the Mint Museum of Art found in downtown Charlotte near many of Charlotte's historic hotels and buildings.
There are plenty of popular attractions at the Charlotte Discovery Place, but the biggest group favorite is static electricity demonstration which makes the hair stick straight out. A tropical rainforest with information about flora and fauna is also available year-round, as is the Discovery Place Aquarium with live fish and small sea creatures for viewing. If you plan to see an IMAX movie, note that your admission fee to get into the Charlotte Discovery Place does not cover the theatre fee, so you will need to pay that separately (costs are between $8 and $15 per person). Charlotte Discovery Place is also located conveniently close to a number of great Charlotte hotels, making this popular museum walking distance from multiple places to stay.
In addition to the public exhibits, it is also possible to host a private party at the Discovery Place Museum for birthdays and other events. The birthday party packages start at $250, and include access to the museum, food, party favors, and special attention from Charlotte Discovery Place Museum staff. To book a private event, you must call the museum directly.
