Greensboro North Carolina

Greensboro

The city of Greensboro North Carolina is the third largest city in the state, after Raleigh and Charlotte. Greensboro was formed in 1808 and eventually became the county seat for the area. The city of Winston-Salem was once called Greensboro, but the names were changed in the late 19th century. Greensboro North Carolina is home to the University of North Carolina (among other colleges) and the Greensboro Coliseum, which hosts most of the big Greensboro NC events.

The city of Greensboro was named after American Major General Nathanael Greene, who was a general during the American Revolutionary War. Major Greene’s losing battle in 1781 actually helped weaken British troops, leading to the eventual victory of the United States in their war for independence against the British. Greensboro North Carolina began to grow into a major urban area in the mid 19th century, when the government made the city a hub for the coming railroad. From that time until this, Greensboro North Carolina has continued to grow in size and prosperity.

Greensboro North Carolina has also been known in the south as one of the major hubs for racial integration and change during the 20th century. In February of 1960, four black college students staged a sit-in at an all-white lunch counter in Greensboro, sparking a larger sit-in that lasted for several months. The sit-in helped to greatly advance the Civil Rights movement in North Carolina, and today the stools the four students sat on during the protest are housed in the Smithsonian.

Today, almost all major Greensboro NC events are held at the famous Greensboro Coliseum. Rock and country music concerts as well as basketball and other sporting events can be seen here. Symphony shows and other special Greensboro NC events also often take place here at the coliseum. Tickets prices for shows will vary depending on the show, but tickets can be purchased throughout the Greensboro area at various outlets.

Greensboro is a great city for vacations and for exploring. The Greensboro Historical Museum is one of the biggest attractions in the city, and is located right in the heart of downtown. An excellent collection of artifacts from local Native Americans and settlers are just one part of this museum’s appeal. Located just a few minutes away from Greensboro in the city of Randleman is the Richard Petty Museum, another major area attraction. Richard Petty is one of the great racers of NASCAR and the museum is devoted to his memory with memorabilia and plenty of great souvenirs to take home.

The city of Greensboro also has its own airport, known as Greensboro Airport or as the Piedmont Triad Airport. The Greensboro Airport services all local cities and towns in the Triad area. Flights into the Greensboro Airport can be scheduled from Raleigh, Charlotte, and other major cities in the south and throughout the United States. Once you land, there are a number of great Greensboro hotels worth checking out in the downtown area for your stay. If you come to visit in the summer, be sure to make reservations well in advance.
