The name for Kill Devil Hills is fabled to have come by way of pirates who once called these shores home. Legend has it that pirates spent many nights creating moonshine in the area filled with sand dune hills that was, as they said, "strong enough to kill the devil". The name stuck, and the area is in fact also remembered for the strong rum that was once shipped from Kill Devil Hills North Carolina by pirates and during the height of the slave trade.
