Indoor and outdoor picnic areas also provide good places to kick back and relax, especially when the weather is favorable. The base lodge offers food service, it should be noted. It is also where you can find the ski school, the ski patrol headquarters, and the ticket window. The closest major city to the resort is the capital of Columbus, which is approximately 50 miles to the east. You can always base yourself at one of the Columbus hotels if you want to enjoy some urban exposure when you're not on the slopes, though serious skiers and snowboarders might prefer a motel or hotel in smaller area cities such as Bellefontaine and Marysville. These cities are seven miles away and nineteen miles away respectively.
December through March is the peak ski season in Ohio, and should you be heading to Mad River Mountain to make some turns, the weekday hours are 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. On Friday and Saturday, Mad River Mountain Ohio opens at 9 a.m. and doesn't close until 3 a.m. Sunday hours are 9 a.m to 9:30 p.m. It takes a few hours to drive from Cleveland to the Mad River Mountain Ski Resort. As such, skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts who are visiting the Cleveland area can substitute Mad River with Boston Mills/Brandywine. These two resorts are sister resorts are also among the best in the state and are just a short drive from both Cleveland and Akron.
