Oregon Museum of Science and Industry

Oregon Museum of Science and Industry

The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry is found In Portland, Oregon on the eastern shore of the Willamette River, near Waterfront Park.  The Oregon Museum of Science is noted for the wealth of great exhibits and activities found within its walls that cater both to children and adults.  Many of the exhibits found at the Oregon Museum of Science & Industry are meant to encourage visitors to interact them, and this hands-on approach has made the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry one of the most popular attractions in Portland.

The Oregon Museum of Science & Industry was first opened in 1944 and was initially housed at the Portland Hotel.  The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry moved to its current site in 1992, and upgrades since that time have resulted in six enormous halls with exhibits for the entire family.  Another popular feature of the Oregon Museum of Science is the IMAX Dome, formerly referred to as the OMNIMAX Theater.  This theatre was the first of its kind in the Pacific Northwest and has been one of Portland’s biggest attractions ever since it opened in the early 1990’s.

While there are many auditoriums and exhibits at the Oregon Museum of Science, one of the most appealing attractions for movie-lovers is the USS Blueback, a submarine that was used in the movie, The Hunt For Red October.  Visitors not only get to see the outside, but are able to take one of the daily tours of the submarine’s interior, as well.    Other great exhibits at the Oregon Museum of Science & Industry include the toddler Discovery Space, with open space for small children to play, as well as the simulated earthquake and tornado displays.  Throughout the year, the museum also offers laser-light shows and astronomy presentation in the Murdock Sky Theatre.

Not only does the museum offer exhibits throughout the year with a focus on natural sciences and technology, but there are also camps operating throughout the summer for interested children.  The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry also maintains the largest science museum outreach program in the United States, and often teams with classrooms and school districts to bring science to the children of Oregon.

The Museum is open from 9:30 am until 5:30 pm between Labor Day and mid-June, and from 9:30 until 7 pm between mid June and Labor Day.  Discounted tickets are available for children, seniors, and students.  Special presentations will usually be priced separately from museum ticket prices.
