Scarborough Beach Rhode Island is one of the only true Atlantic facing beaches in the state. While others may face in the direction of the ocean, they are primarily set on Block Island or Rhode Island Sound or are on Narragansett Bay. Scarborough State Beach is located in the town of Narragansett, about halfway between Charlestown Beach and the western mouth of Narragansett Bay, about 35 miles south of Providence. There are numerous Scarborough Beach vacation rentals in this area because it is probably the state's most popular and well-known beach.
Scarborough State Beach property contains 26 full acres and boasts nearly half a mile of prime beach frontage. Developed originally in 1937, the state acquired another 16 acres and more than 1,000 feet of beach frontage in 1987 and developed it. This section is actually in the little community of Scarborough Hills and now called the South Complex, with the original facility referred to as the North Complex. Things to do here include surfing, because the Atlantic facing nature of the beach means this is the only real ocean surfing beach in the state. It is a good beach for board surfing and an excellent beach for body surfing.
Scarborough Beach Rhode Island has lifeguards are on duty during the day in the summer. There are picnic tables both in the sun and under shaded gazebos. Two large pavilions (one on the North Complex and one on the South Complex) with restrooms, coin-operated hot showers, free cold showers, changing rooms, and beach gear and food concessions. There is a long and wide boardwalk, the beach is completely wheelchair accessible, and there is ample parking. There is also an observation tower with spectacular views. One of the things that makes Scarborough State Beach so attractive is that fact that it is very well maintained and extremely clean—something fairly remarkable for such a popular public beach. It also has plenty of room to spread out, because it's large enough that it doesn't often get extremely crowded. No pets, alcohol, or overnight camping is permitted. However, there are public and private campgrounds nearby.
From your Scarborough Beach vacation rentals you will have access to numerous attractions. The Point Judith Country Club is nearby in case you want to get in some golfing. The Point Judith Light is also nearby, along with some of the other lighthouses that played such an integral part in the rich maritime history of the state. Most of the Scarborough Beach vacation rentals are modern ranch style suburban type homes. Even so many of them are within quick walking distance to beach. If you spend some time doing your research, you will find traditional old-fashioned beach cottages with direct access. There is good fishing along the shoreline. If you want a little more adventurous fishing, there are deep sea and charter outfitters in the area. If you have time for day trips, you'll find that Scarborough Beach Rhode Island is only a couple miles from Jerusalem where you can catch the ferry to Block Island.
