Beaufort South Carolina

The town of Beaufort South Carolina has been in existence since the 16th century, making it one of the oldest towns in the United States. With its long history, Beaufort is an appealing place for visitors who want to experience some of the best of historical South Carolina. Much of the town (just over 300 acres) has been designated a National Historic Landmark, and many of the country’s oldest buildings can still be found here in Beaufort South Carolina.

Beaufort South Carolina is also an appealing town thanks to its close proximity to the popular Hilton Head. Beaufort is only about 30 miles north of Hilton Head and although Hilton Head golf is perhaps more well-known than golf in Beaufort, there is still excellent Beaufort golf course property open for golfing. This can make daytrips to Beaufort from Hilton Head a great option, or trips for Beaufort travel on its own a great idea as well. Recent events threatened some of the best Beaufort golf course property, when developers began purchasing Beaufort golf course property to turn much of it into condos rather than golf courses. Tourism and local businesses prevailed, however, and today it seems that Beaufort travel can still include golfing.

One of the most popular Beaufort golf courses is the Country Club at Pleasant Point. Thanks to the moderate weather enjoyed in Beaufort, golf courses in town are open year round, and this extends to the Pleasant Point course. Green fees are around $80 per person, although travelers looking for a deal might try golfing between November and February for a lower price. Another popular course for golfing in Beaufort is the Marsh Course, located in town and open for public use. Green fees here are around $50 per person, and the Marsh Course is considered to be one of the more challenging courses in town.

In addition to golfing, Beaufort travel is popular among those who want to see historical America. The oldest home in Beaufort still standing dates to the year 1717, and a number of other 18th and 19th century buildings are still maintained in town. The town is considered so idyllic that a number of movie scenes have been filmed here, including Forest Gump and, The Prince of Tides. Visitors interested in taking a guided tour of the historical buildings should contact The Spirit of Old Beaufort, a tour company in Beaufort which leads guided walking tours through the historic district of town. A guide dressed in period garb leads tourists through buildings and homes for about 2 hours, with information and explanations offered along the way. The cost of this tour is around $13 for adults and $7.50 for children. Travelers who want to take their own walking tour can check in with the Beaufort Chamber of Commerce, open each day from 9am until 5:30pm, and pick up a map and information for personal walking tours.

One building not included in the guided tour is the John Mark Verdier House Museum, a home which dates to 1802 and is currently open as a museum featuring period furniture and examples of what life was like in the United States during the early 19th century. This museum is open Monday through Saturday from 11:30 to 3:30. The historic district is also a good place to find Beaufort hotels for folks who want to stay overnight in some of the most historical buildings in America.
