Spartanburg South Carolina

Spartanburg

Spartanburg South Carolina is located next to the city of Greenville, to the west of Columbia. Spartanburg SC takes its name from the Spartan Rifles, which was a group of militia soldiers during the Revolutionary War which was influential in helping to win key battles during the war. Spartanburg officially became an incorporated town in 1831, and since that time has served as a great location for vacations as well as a good side trip destination from Greenville, South Carolina.

Spartanburg travel is characterized by visits to some great South Carolina plantations, as well as the Cherokee Scenic Highway. The scenic highway starts just outside Spartanburg SC and takes travelers past Lawson's Fork Creek, one of the area's most beautiful places for a hike. The Cottonwood Trail is the place to go near the scenic highway and walking trail for a hike. Along the way, Spartanburg travelers will find multiple areas for picnicking with tables in place. Also found on the trail is the Hatcher Garden and Woodland Preserve, which is a thickly wooded area that provides a protected area for wildlife and special kinds of birds from Spartanburg.

Another popular choice for Spartanburg travelers on vacation is the Cotton Creek Golf Club, an 18-hole course found in town. When compared to many of the more expensive golf courses in South Carolina such as the ones found in Hilton Head and Myrtle Beach, the $15 - $25 green fee seems quite reasonable. Other golf courses in Spartanburg SC include the Oak Ridge Country Club and the River Falls Plantation course. Each of these courses is 18-holes and both charge less than $50 per person for green fees.

Folks staying at a Spartanburg hotel or in town with children and looking for something to do may also consider checking out the Spartanburg Swim Center, a community swimming pool which is indoors and heated. Open swimming is just $1 per person, and there are separate family times and lap swimming times. The town pool is open daily from 7:30 am until 8:30 pm.

Travelers who come to town on a South Carolina flight headed for Spartanburg will likely come through the Greenville Spartanburg Airport. As you might expect, the Greenville Spartanburg Airport is located halfway between Spartanburg and Greenville and is frequented by locals from both cities. The Greenville Spartanburg Airport is considered to be one of the nicest airports in the state, featuring conference rooms throughout the airport. Rental car companies are also found on the bottom floor of the Greenville Spartanburg Airport, and include Alamo, Avis, Budget, Hertz, and Thrifty offices. The airport is about a 25 minute drive to either Spartanburg or Greenville, and to Columbia or Charlotte the drive is about an hour and a half. The Greenville Spartanburg Airport opened in 1962 and services Us Airways, United, Northwest, Delta, Continental and American Eagle airlines with frequent flight times. Many of the most popular flights are from Dallas, New York and Atlanta.
