There are many things to do in South Carolina; from
enjoying the outdoors through a fishing
or camping trip to exploring
some of South Carolina's past
with a trip to a South Carolina plantation. Of the many
places to visit in South Carolina, Hilton Head and Myrtle
Beach are among the most popular choices for families.
South Carolina attractions in the larger cities of Charleston
and Columbia are also numerous,
and in general travelers can find a piece of history
no matter which city they visit. The following information
includes helpful hints about some of the most popular
things to do in South Carolina.
Visit Hilton Head
Whether you travel to this beach-lined island for golf, swimming, tennis, fishing or simply relaxation, this is one of the top places to visit in South Carolina. Hilton Head golf resorts and vacation rentals are two of the most appealing ways to book a vacation here, but travelers can also camp when visiting. Prices are highest during the summer and the island is at its busiest, so book your stay well in advance if you plan to visit during June, July or August.
Each May and June, the city of Charleston puts on one of the biggest South Carolina attractions around. This culture and arts festival takes its inspiration from a similar festival in the town of Spoleto, Italy, and features hundreds of plays, operas, musical performances and more. Tickets are purchased for individual shows, so be sure to buy yours early if you find a show you would like to see.
Also located in Charleston, the Riverbanks Zoo is another of the most fun things to do in South Carolina, especially for families. Admission is around $9 for adults and $6 for children and the zoo is open daily for visitors. This is South Carolina’s largest zoo and one of the first to join the trend of creating natural habitats for zoo animals as well as one of the first to take an active role in the protection of endangered species.
Along the shores of the Charleston Bay is Patriots Point,
one of the largest Naval and Maritime museums in the United
States. Historical information, memorabilia and a wide
number of ships and fighter jets make this one of the
more interesting places to visit in South Carolina. Tours
from Patriots Point can also be arranged by boat to the
nearby Fort Sumter National Monument. Boat tours leave
daily and entrance to the monument is free, though the
boat ride is not.
Plantations have become one of the more popular South Carolina attractions and are a great way to experience some of the history of the state. Botanical gardens and antique furniture characterize most of the southern plantations, and fees are usually associated with entrance. Some plantations do not welcome small children, so be sure to check ahead if you are coming with a family.
The Greenville Zoo is another great attraction in South
Carolina, and is of course located in the city of Greenville,
South Carolina. Although the zoo is somewhat small, it
is well maintained and is one of the best attractions
for families in Greenville. The zoo is open daily.
