Brooks Museum

The Memphis Brooks Museum of Art is found east of downtown in Overton Park, Memphis. More than 86,000 square feet of space are home to a collection of artwork including fine and decorative art from antiques to present day works. Renaissance, Baroque, classical Roman, and Hellenistic works can be found throughout the Brooks Museum as well as contemporary works from local artists. The Brooks Museum is without a doubt the largest fine art museum in Tennessee and offers numerous things to do for visitors.

The Brooks Museum of Art plays host to a fascinating permanent collection as well as visiting exhibitions from all over the world. It offers extraordinary access to artwork from many different cultures and from numerous time periods as well. As an honored associate of the Smithsonian Institute the Brooks Museum of Art will offer an internal look into the Smithsonian collection over the coming years.

The Brooks Museum of Art houses a fabulous permanent collection of art including sculpture and painting, works on paper, ancient art, Asian and African works. Baroque, British, French Impressionism, Italian Renaissance and 20th century artists are all featured at the museum. Many works in various styles by famous artists are housed in the museum including works from Pissaso, Renoir, Reynolds, Lawrence as well as the American artists Winslow Homer, Childe Hassam and Robert Henri. Visiting exhibitions offer an exciting and ever-changing aspect to the museum. The works range in both geography and time from contemporary American art to ancient Tibetan works.

Admission to the Memphis Art Museum is $6.00, or go on a Wednesday and it’s free of charge! On Mondays the Memphis art museum is closed to the public so keep that in mind when planning a visit. A convenient option the museum offers is if visitors leave the museum, any part of the building can be re-entered at any time during that same day of purchase. This is convenient if wanting to break up a long visit.

The museum is kept at quite a cool temperature which better preserves the works on display so remember to take along a jacket or warm sweater. There is a dining option inside the Memphis art museum called Brushmark! The bistro offers southern-style gourmet cuisine on the main level and the menu can be viewed at the museums website ahead of time.

The Children’s Museum in Memphis is a great place to take the kids for the afternoon. The Children’s Museum in Memphis is jam-packed with informal learning experiences of quality which are both educational and extremely fun for kids. Interactive, hands-on exhibits let children discover art, math, science and more in a unique and exciting way. Though unique art pieces are on display in a small yet admirable collection, the Children’s Museum in Memphis is not an art museum. All art works have been donated to the museum for the benefit of the children.

A fun and colorful child-friendly map helps to guide visitors around the museum to see the different exhibits and the museum asks parents to encourage their kids to touch everything that isn’t behind glass. Some exhibits include Kid’s Market, City Friends, Playscape Park, Recycle Factory and Growing Healthy.

For a fun, relaxing and educational day trip with the family why not visit the Children’s Museum in Memphis and take the kids through all the fun and interactive exhibits that are sure to please. Then take a look through the Brooks Museum as well, where children are encouraged to visit and strollers are readily available.
