An island all of its own, Galveston Texas is a hot destination for those seeking a getaway that encompasses everything from relaxing to participating in many adventurous activities. Fun events like Kitefest, Springfest and the biggest party of all, Mardi Gras, is Galveston’s forte Shops, restaurants, miles of beaches, happening nightlife, great weather, and a wealth of history highlight only some of the fantastic Galveston tourist attractions. The Strand


A revered historical district in Galveston, The Strand encompasses the charm and welcoming feel of the city’s small town ambience. Shops, restaurants, museums and galleries offer just a few of the Galveston attractions worth checking out in the area. Visit during the evening and enjoy Galveston nightlife over a few drinks. Ankle Express is all you’ll need for transportation in this favorite walking district.


Texas Beaches


Stewart Beach Park is a family-friendly beach area where sun and surf rule. Across the causeway a little slice of paradise awaits with picnic pavilions, bathhouses, concession stands and playgrounds offering lots of things to do in Galveston. Head over to another of the great Galveston attractions at East Beach. Galveston tourist attractions at East Beach include a games room, volleyball courts and a host of live music. The Seawall is one of the Galveston attractions built after a devastating hurricane swept into the city. The expanse of beach at this location offers many things to do in Galveston Texas such as take a walk along the protective wall or plunge into cooling waters during the often sweltering summertime.


Moody Gardens


An entertainment center and lovely gardens with exotic and domestic flora define Moody Gardens as a fun and scenic area great for a day trip. An ice rink, IMAX theater, and aquarium exhibit are some of the other Galveston attractions at Moody Gardens. Overlooking the Gulf Bay there are also restaurants serving up delicious lunch and dinner fare.


Texas Cruises


Cruises depart often from Galveston encompassing either a day trip around the port and harbor or week long or more cruises leaving the area to destinations such as Cozumel, Montego Bay and the Yucatan. Day cruises are easily found around Galveston Bay near Seawolf Park where both small and large pleasure boats arrive and depart at the Port of Galveston through the island basin. The Colonel Cruise takes guests on a paddlewheeled, multi-decked “floating museum” for a tour of the Bay leaving from Moody Gardens. Saturdays include dinner and dancing. Dolphin Watch cruises are also available through the harbor.


Bishop Palace


Built in 1888 the Bishop Palace is a Victorian castle that is considered one of the oldest Galveston attractions and one of the most important buildings in the nation. Grandiose and well known, a visit to the palace is another of the things to do in Galveston Texas that shouldn’t be missed. Ornately carved adornments, stained glass windows and bronze dragons are a few of the highlights of the castle’s architecture.


Texas Seaport Museum


Take in things to do in Galveston Texas of the nautical kind and learn what it’s like to be aboard an 1877 tall ship. Visitors can climb on deck and explore the tall ship Elissa at the Seaport Museum. The history of Elissa is documented by a film show at the adjacent theater.


Galveston Island State Park


Cutting across the center of the island lies another of the many Galveston tourist attractions popular with visitors. 2,000 acres provide plenty of room to enjoy the many things to do in Galveston in the great outdoors. The Gulf and the Bay flank either side of this excellent area.


Sclitterbahn Galveston Island Waterpark


Find respite from a Texas summer heat wave at the one of the Galveston attractions excellent for a day of cool fun. The waterpark features a massive assortment of aquatic adventure including a the Whitewater River, Cove and Beach, Torrent Beach and many exciting rides. Opt out of Galveston hotels for the night and choose one of the cabana rentals on site.


Nightlife


Things to do in Galveston during the evenings include sampling the great variety of watering holes available. Hot clubs, piano bars, nightly jazz, outdoor concerts and wine bars provide something for everyone’s tastes. Modern, sophisticated bars provide menus bursting with the best selection of spirits, local beer, imported and domestic wine and more. Just minutes from the sand, head over to one of the many beach bars for a relaxing evening out.


Moody Mansion Museum


“Moody” is the well known name of a prominent family originating from Galveston and the Moody Mansion Museum is another to add to the list of things to do in Galveston. The mansion, a late 19th century dwelling, was constructed with a combination of terra cotta tile, red brick and limestone. Upon entering visitors can view the fantastic collection of Moody furnishings, decorative arts and a vast collection of silver pieces. The combination of art museum and historical home makes this one of the more unique things to do in Galveston Texas.
