In the 1800s, the area that we now refer to as Moab Utah served as a crossing point for the Colorado River. Although the Mormon settlers tried to establish a trading port in the area, repeated attacks by the Native Americans who in habited the area caused the project to be abandoned. The first permanent settlement was established in 1878, and the town was officially incorporated on December 20th, 1902. You may have seen the Moab Utah area in a number of Hollywood films, which include the John Wayne classic Geronimo, City Slickers II, and Mission Impossible II.Thelma and Louise made their dramatic leap into the Colorado River from the Shafer Trail under Dead Horse Point.
