Monument Valley Road

A drive along Monument Valley Road is something that many visitors to the Four Corners region look to add to their itinerary. The reason for this is easy to understand. This road winds its way through one of the most amazing landscapes of the Southwest. In Monument Valley, flat desert expanses are broken up by isolated mesas and buttes, and the austere beauty of it all is hard to deny. No wonder it has served as the backdrop for so many films.

Monument Valley Road, or Monument Valley Drive, as it is also known, is a scenic, seventeen-mile-long route that loops around the Monument Valley Tribal Park. Along its route are no less than eleven scenic viewpoints that provide amazing views of the area’s best natural landmarks. One viewpoint centers around the famed Three Sisters spires, for example, and at Artist’s Point, you can admire the East and West Mitten Buttes, and a number of other renowned formations. At some viewpoints, there is the added opportunity to do a little shopping, thanks to the Navajos who sell handmade jewelry, rugs, and other enticing crafts.

The Monument Valley Road starts and ends at the Monument Valley Tribal Park visitor center. Since the road is a dirt road and it has some steep and uneven portions, it is best navigated with a 4 wheel drive vehicle. At the very least, you should have a car with sufficient ground clearance, and it should be noted that only small and medium-sized Rvs are allowed on the road. It is possible to rent 4x4 Jeeps at the visitor center, and should you prefer, you can look to arrange a guided driving tour. Often times, the guided driving tours of Monument Valley allow their guests to explore portions of the park that are closed off to other visitors, so they are definitely worth keeping in mind.

Generally speaking, a Monument Valley Road drive takes around two hours to complete. That being said, this general time frame can fluctuate in relation to how many times you stop, how much time you choose to spend at the various viewpoints, and what activities you might indulge in if you take a guided tour. Area hotels provide good travel bases should you need a place to stay before or after your Monument Valley Drive adventure. The closest of them all is the aptly-named View Hotel. You can find this excellent lodging establishment near the park’s visitor center.
