Salt Lake City Skiing

Salt Lake City skiing is renowned for its quality, and when it comes down to it, you could hardly pick a better city to base yourself in for a ski vacation. Utah claims to have The Greatest Snow on Earth, and this is hard to argue when the powder starts to fall, which it often does. Toss in the fact that the slopes are usually uncrowded, and it only gets better. Special Interconnect Tours can be arranged on a Salt Lake City ski vacation, it is worth noting, and these tours allow advanced skiers to explore backcountry terrain while sampling six different mountains.

The ski resorts near Salt Lake City include some of the best in the entire country, and it takes less than an hour to drive to them from the airport or the downtown area. This is just part of the reason why a Salt Lake City ski vacation can be so ideal. Another reason is that there are slopes to fit all levels of skiers and snowboarders, and as far as rates are concerned, you might be surprised at how affordable a day on the slopes in northern Utah can be.

There are a number of quality ski resorts near Salt Lake City, and they include Park City, Deer Valley, and Snowbird. These are three of the more expensive resorts in the area, and in many ways, they are akin to upscale Colorado resorts such as Aspen and Vail. As is true of the other top-rated Salt Lake City skiing destinations, these resorts are due east of town and can be reached in less than an hour by car.

Park City is perennially rated as being one of the top ski resorts in the country for families, and should you be planning on taking lessons during a visit, group sizes are reduced to five people or less. This allows the instructors to better focus on their students, which typically translates to better results. There are 3,300 acres of terrain to ski at Park City, and the more than 100 runs range from easy to advanced. Tricksters can show off in one of four terrain parks or on the huge halfpipe. Over at nearby Deer Valley, the 90 runs and 1,750 acres of terrain are reserved for skiers only, and the services are about as good as they get. Plenty of million-dollar homes and condos can be found at this upscale resort, not to mention some relatively ritzy resort hotels, and you won't have trouble finding something good to eat at the numerous gourmet restaurants.

On a Salt Lake City ski vacation, all you have to do to find a good resort is head for one of the nearby canyons. More specifically, Little Cottonwood Canyon and Big Cottonwood Canyon. These canyons are home to four of the best ski resorts near Salt Lake City, and these resorts include Snowbird, Alta, Brighton, and Solitude. Both Snowbird and Alta can be found in the Little Cottonwood Canyon, and it's worth noting that the latter is skier-only. At Snowbird, on the other hand, the 2,500 acres of terrain are also open to snowboarders, and thanks to the 3,240-foot vertical drop, some of the slopes are very exhilarating. When a long run is what you have in mind during a trip to Snowbird, you can hop on the tram to get to Hidden Peak. Once at the top of Hidden Peak, you can take on the two-and-a-half-mile run.

Should your Salt Lake City skiing or snowboarding adventure see you venturing over to Big Cottonwood Canyon, the friendly resorts of Brighton and Solitude will be your choices when it comes to places to play. These are two of the smaller ski resorts near Salt Lake City, with Brighton getting a lot of attention for its family-friendly appeal. You can find reasonably priced lodging at both of these resorts, and it's worth noting that Solitude features some very attractive ski-in, ski-out vacation rentals.

Rounding out the choices for ski resorts near Salt Lake City is The Canyons Resort. This is the largest ski and snowboard resort in Utah, and it offers 3,700 acres of terrain to explore. The lodging establishments at The Canyons can fit a range of budgets, and families might try to plan their visit around The Canyons Family Winterfest. This fun festival features family activities, live music, and more.
