Sundance Film Festival History and Facts

This film festival was begun in 1978 by Robert Redford's film production company and was named for his character in the 1969 film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. It is not just a star-studded showing of the year's best films, but a highly respected resource for independent artists around the world. Scores of workshops and film labs are held under the umbrella of the festival throughout the year, culminating in the Sundance Festival in Utah in January. Attendees can take in single showings, multiple films, and join in parties held by film makers.

Sundance Film Festival Locations

Most of the Sundance Festival in Utah showings are held in the beautiful ski resort of Park City, although some showings are available in nearby Ogden and the capital of Salt Lake City, as well as the Sundance Resort located high in the remote Wasatch Mountains not far from Provo and at Kimball Junction. The biggest concentration of festival events are several venues located throughout Park City, and there is free shuttle service during the festival. There are several venues located in the other towns and cities, too.

Sundance Film Festival Tickets

Sundance Film Festival 2023 passes are in high demand, and they can only be purchased through official festival channels and only by following the strict guidelines. During a three-week period in September and October, you can register to receive a half hour timeslot, which is randomly selected by computer. If you have been lucky enough to receive a timeslot, you will be sent the website address and phone number that you can use to purchase tickets during your allotted 30 minutes. There is a similar procedure for purchasing advance tickets to individual film showings. The festival occurs during the last two weeks of January.

Individual film tickets also go on sale to the general public a couple days before the festival opens, and you can continue to purchase them throughout the festival at the end of January.

Sundance Film Festival Lodging

Since the Sundance Film Festival occurs in one of the most celebrated ski resorts at the height of the ski season, lodging is at a premium during the festival. Prices will also be at a premium. You won't be able to find rock bottom cheap lodging, but there will be some properties that are relatively reasonable. If you are seeking cheaper prices, looking outside of Park City can be the best way to go. There are cheap hotels in Salt Lake City, Logan, and other nearby cities.

For those on a budget, try the Chateau Apres Lodge at 1299 Norfolk Avenue. It is a classic Alpine-style lodge with comfortable basic rooms that can sleep three or four guests. There are also dormitory rooms with bunk beds with shared shower and toilet facilities. There is free high-speed Internet service and Continental breakfast is included. At the other end of the Sundance Festival in Utah accommodation scale is the Treasure Mountain Inn at 255 Main Street with beautiful suites, as well as a three-bedroom townhome. Both are located just east of the main highway 224 that runs north and south through town, and both are within walking distance of festival venues.
