Arlington

Arlington

Arlington Virginia, located just a few hundred feet across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., played a historic role in the creation of our nation’s capital. Arlington Virginia is also the site for the famous Arlington National Cemetery, established during the Civil War as an American military cemetery. The Arlington National cemetery sits on the grounds of Confederate General Robert E. Lee's home, the historic Arlington House, and is also the burial site for countless veterans from all the nation's wars -- from the American Revolution through The War on Terrorism in Iraq. The grave of John F. Kennedy's resides in Arlington National Cemetery also, commemorated by the Eternal Flame. Other Arlington Cemetery monuments include The Tomb of the Unknowns and the Iwo Jima Memorial. Arlington Virginia is also home to The Pentagon and the Headquarters for the U.S. Department of Defense.

While Arlington Virginia is home to the famous Arlington cemetery, an Arlington vacation can include much more. If you enjoy biking, why not try the Arlington Virginia 23-mile self-guided tour that includes 12 educational stops along the way. You can also take a relaxing hike on the Arlington Virginia W& O.D. Railroad Trail that will wind you through both the urban areas and the countryside of Northern Virginia.

If you need to pick up a new pair of sneakers after your hike through the Railroad Trail or your visit to the Arlington Cemetery, visit the Fashion Centre at Pentagon City, a four-story mall boasting 130 upscale stores, a sunlit food court, and six movie theatres. After you shopped till you dropped, eat out at an Arlington restaurant specializing in seafood, such as RT’s Seafood Kitchen with a selection of fresh seafood, sandwiches, salads, Po' Boys, as well as Cajun and Creole specialties. Another Arlington restaurant that may interest you is Sgt. Peppers I, an Arlington restaurant specializing in homemade pasta, soups, salads, gourmet pizzas and more.

Before leaving Arlington Virginia, be sure to check out The Arlington Historical Museum, owned and operated by the Historical Society and built in 1891. The building is designated a Virginia State Historical Landmark and is also on the National Register of Historic Sites. Learn about Arlington Virginia history, architecture, civil war history and much more. The Museum is open to the public Saturdays and Sundays except in February, when the Museum is closed. Museum hours are from 1 - 4 p.m.
