Suggested Itinerary Virginia

Virginia is full of history, and yet there are also plenty of hikes and outdoor activities for every traveler. Suggested itineraries for Virginia and suggested itineraries for Richmond, its capital city, can depend on your specific travel interests. The suggested itineraries for Virginia shown below can help you decide how you would like to spend your vacation.

Suggested itineraries for Virginia:

1-3 Days

If you only have a day or two to visit Virginia, your Virginia suggested itineraries should likely focus on just one or two areas. Richmond, Jamestown, Chesapeake, Norfolk, and Williamsburg are all excellent choices and will support a two or three day vacation all on their own. Choose one of these areas and find out why so many travelers love to travel to the historic sections of Virginia.

4-7 Days

Virginia suggested itineraries for travelers with more time in Virginia can also include some trips to some of the historical sites that can be found outside the larger cities. The Hampton Roads on the Virginia Peninsula is a great side trip, and while you are there you can also visit the Virginia Air and Space Center. A trip to the Cape Henry Lighthouse, a drive to see the Civil War Reenactment happening each year in Virginia, or a stop at the New Market Battlefield State are all great reasons to rent a car and drive. Along the way, you can stop for shopping at some of the larger towns in Virginia.

7+ Days

With more than a week to travel, Virginia suggested itineraries can also include trips into the mountains for adventures in nature. Biking, golfing, fishing, white water rafting, and hiking can all be enjoyed in Virginia. Some of the best trails for exploring will be found along the Appalachian Trial and along the Blue Ridge. Shenandoah National Park and the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area are both excellent choice for a hike, a picnic, or some scenic picture taking views.

Suggested itineraries for Richmond:

1-3 Days

With just a day or two in the city, suggested itineraries for Richmond should all include tours of the historical city. Whether you walk, rent a car, or book a tour with a company, you will want to be sure and see some of the historical sites that continue to make Richmond an important city. If you only have time for a few sites, be sure to stop by the Museum and White House of the Confederacy, the Richmond National Battlefield Park, and the Museum of Virginia History.

4-7 Days

Your additional days can be spent relaxing in a southern restaurant with some hefty helpings of that beloved southern comfort food. Order a sidecar or a mojito in the summer and defy the humid heat. You will also have time to tour the Edgar Allan Poe Museum, the Petersburg National Battlefield Park, the Wilton House, and the state capital building. Richmond also has an IMAX dome that shows various science films throughout the year. In the evening, your best bet for entertainment will likely be catching a show of some sort; Richmond is not known for its party atmosphere and pubs and clubs can be hard to find.

7+ Days

With a week or more, your time can be split between historical sites in Richmond, side trips to nearby towns, and days spent in the countryside hiking. Some great side trips from Richmond include a trip to Petersburg, a drive to the Center Hill Mansion or the Siege Museum, or a tour of some of the lesser known Civil War battlefields that surround Richmond.

However you decide to enjoy the colonial state of Virginia, be sure to spend some time visiting the historical sites. Even if you are not a history buff, it is hard not to be impressed by some of the nation’s oldest pieces of history.
