Virginia Day Trip

Virginia Day Trip

A state steeped in colonial history, Virginia remains one of the great places to visit in the United States. Virginia day trips can include treks by car through back roads and mountain passes, as well as trips to some of the country’s most historic towns. Whether you hope to find Civil War battlefields or enjoy the great outdoors on your day trip in Virginia, you’ll be sure to find ample samplings of both.

Arlington National Cemetery

Northern Virginia is closely associated with Washington D.C., and yet the area holds some treasures of its own. On your northern day trip in Virginia be sure to stop at the Arlington National Cemetery.  This can actually be a gripping way to spend a day, and you may want to plan to take this day easy.

Mount Vernon

The mansion Mount Vernon, former home of George Washington, is also located in the area and worth a stop on Virginia day trips. Also in the area and worth noting on your day trip in Virginia is the National Air and Space Museum. Great Falls Park, full of beautiful foliage and gentle hiking trails is also located in Northern Virginia and a must for day trips Virginia offers in the north.

Appomattox Court House National Historic Park

A Virginia one day trip through central Virginia will be full of historic and memorable landmarks. The town of Appomattox is home to the Appomattox Court House National Historic Park and the site of the surrender of the Confederate forces to finally bring an end to the Civil War. Also located in central Virginia and a major highlight for a Virginia one day trip is the city of Charlottesville.

Monticello

The former home of Thomas Jefferson, Monticello, is located in Charlottesville along with a myriad of other interesting artifacts related to President Jefferson and the era in which he lived. The town of Bedford in Central Virginia is where travelers will find the National D-day Memorial. A drive through central Virginia may be quite a full day, but some of the state’s most famous attractions will be located along the way.

Shenandoah Valley

The Shenandoah Valley is an area of Virginia located primarily in Western Virginia and is well known for its beauty and its depth of Civil War history. A Virginia one day trip through the Shenandoah Valley will ideally include a trip to Harper’s Ferry and the Shenandoah National Park. The New Market Battlefield of the Civil War, located in the town of New Market, is one of the historic Civil War sites where tourists can view a reenactment of the original battle each year. The Shenandoah Valley is also widely noted for the abundance of limestone found within its boundaries. One of the most incredible formations, the Natural Bridge, is a naturally formed limestone arch which was once worshiped by native tribes and definitely worth check gin out.

Colonial Williamsburg

Though many travelers make an entire vacation out of visiting Williamsburg, it can also be enjoyed as a day trip. The completely operational 18th century village replicates colonial Williamsburg and is one of the most popular attractions in the state. Although there is a fee to enter the historic portion of the village, many travelers feel that this once in a lifetime experience is well worth the fee.
